The secrets of the USS Indianapolis

Leigh sends:

I saw this on PBS last night.
They did a live reveal of the USS Indianapolis's wreckage - the ship that delivered the first atomic bomb.
I'm not much on PBS, but they do have some decent specials sometimes.

The secrets of the USS Indianapolis revealed: Incredible footage shows how the warship was hit by two Japanese torpedoes and its guns are still locked and loaded after it was discovered on the seabed after 72 years by Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen

  • Deep sea explorers used a drone which was sent to the ocean floor in order to beam back stunning images of the USS Indianapolis
  • Last month, researchers found the wreckage of the Indianapolis, which was sunk by a Japanese torpedo in the final days of World War Two
  • The Indianapolis lies over three miles below the surface of the sea somewhere between Guam and the Philippines

  1. So a capitalist, with his own money, found this historic wreck......with no government assistance? Who said, "you didn't build that!" Who thinks we need to expand the role of government?

  2. Two years ago I had the privilege of hearing a U.S. Marine who survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis speak at a WWII re-enactment in Linden, TN. He spoke for about twenty minutes and his story was riveting. After Mr. Harrell stepped from the podium, I extended my hand to shake his and he took mine. I thanked him for his service and for sharing. I also told him that my high school football coach/principal was a radio operator on the Indianapolis. Mr Harrell asked me, "what was his name"? I replied, "Aubrey Hicks". He still has hold of my hand and replies, "he didn't make it". I said, "but he did. Aubrey and three other shipmates went out drinking right before the ship sailed and got plastered. They ended up being AWOL and the shipped sailed without them". Still holding my hand he enthusiastically says. Oh yeah, I remember those boys and that story". He said, "thank you for sharing young man". Hicks, my principal, believed his surviving was Divine Providence and lived his life giving of himself. Coach Hicks was a man who lived and lead by example and lived his life as a Godly man.
Below is a YouTube video of Edgar Harrell. He also has written a book titled "Out of the Depths".
