Here's a tip. Use a background image that's 1000px wide and has a black spot in the middle the width of your content area. make it one solid image then use a "Fixed" tag in your head htlm so that only your content scrolls. the background stays still. I can do it for you would like send me an email.
Personally, my eyes are very sensitive to glare. (It's the cataracts - should be fixed sooner of later. For preference before I have to re-learn how to drive) I find dark b/g light text easiedt to read.
Is that Galt's Gulch there in the background?
