But it's ignored because the people of the time actively pretended it wasn't happening. 1957 was the peak with nearly 10% of women 15-19 getting pregnant nationwide. The father would "do the right thing" and marry her, but divorce was often the result about 10-15 year later. The 1950s wasn't the idyllic period it is often portrayed as.
There’s a J. R. R. Tolkien quote to the effect that the ‘60s wasn’t a fouler decade than the ‘50s, it merely reaped the ‘50s foul harvest. Simply put, you’re right.
