Does Anyone Have a Decent Dash Cam, Front and Rear Facing?

The shit I see on the daily commute is crazy.  I would like to protect myself in the off chance

something happens and I have to fight the insurance company.

I have read reviews and watch comparison videos on youtube.

Some items are battery vs capacitor.

SD card vs cloud.

Length of looping before over writing.

Phone app. I kinda like that idea.

GPS, parking sensing, speed recording etc.

I just wanted to see what the fans are using if anything at all and what kind of luck you've had.

Thanks

  1. Using Wolfbox G840S on our RV. Good image on screen and memory card can be increased depending on your needs

  2. I have BlackVue cameras in all of my vehicles. Picture seems good. Length of record time varies with SD card size. Decent night vision. Saved me a couple of times. App on laptop easy to use and set up. I don't have GPS, so no speed, that could get you into trouble if you ever need the video to protect yourself. JMHO

  3. Not just the insurance companies. I have seen many times when someone else causes the accident and tells the police they were the victim. I am looking into those myself.

  4. BlackVue also, and we added a GPS model to the one in my wife's car to get the speed indication for parking lot interactions.

  5. Bought two of these after 'issue' when a woman drove into my wife's Excursion (?!). So far they are working fine. Surprising clarity. Got the from Amazon - price goes up and down about $30 occaisionally - got one for 99, other for 139, listing at 129 today. No link - you will have to search for it.

    1. I have the same one. It works good... only thing is I turned off sound recordings so that what I'm saying to other drivers couldn't be entered as evidence against me. I can always dispute a lip reader.

  7. When you get a cam get the biggest SD card you can afford and plan on extracting any videos of interest the day of the event. Otherwise the oldest capture files get overwritten and lost more quickly than you expect.

  8. We have been using the Vantrue N4 for more than a year in both vehicles; 100% flawless performance.

  9. Here's LinuxTechTips's video about dashcams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AnyhHl3_tE
he rates several 'affordable ones' of them (hint, they're not great).

Rick T is right about the storage.

    1. I think this is the same video I saw recently. The main problem is that the cameras are all basically the same since the heart of the system is the sensor, and the low end sensors are one of two models

A testing point is: can you read the license plate if the car is in motion. Obviously mainly for tracking down a hit and run driver.

    2. I also, but make SURE you get the correct SD card! The cheaper ones are crap!

  12. Blackvue all the way. You can start with just an SD card, and upgrade to the cloud later if you feel the need. It has WIFI so you can view the recording on a phone or pad, and can handle up to a 256 gig card. The newer models have a built in voltage monitor so that you can have the camera run all the time and it'll turn off before it depletes the cars battery. Mine has been through several Texas summers and shows no sign of problems. Single, dual, and even triple camera models are available.

  14. Blackvue except the 5g doesn't play well with iMac iPhone in my case. I opted for an external battery that's in my glove box and use that to charge my phone, and helmet lights. Easy to install as it runs off the cig lighter highly recommend.
It worked great while it lasted and then 5G kind of messed it up for me. I haven't looked in to fixing it but it's a good thing to have. Presence of mind is necessary during and accident because you have to click to save the incident.
    Maybe it's changed now.
    Best of luck...

  15. I run a SpyTec A-119. I caught a metorite one time and the mic is so good it picked up the whistle it made coming through the atmosphere. I've heard shooting stars before but never recorded audio of one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsZB9I_m_Ys

  16. I run the Garmin 66W. They've got one that records front and back. It also has an app that allows your cellphone to pair with your dashcam.

Also get a 512 GB or 1tb SD card

  17. THANKS for all the suggestions. I will do more research on the ones you all have posted.

  18. I have a cheapie one that works quite well. I bought it to see if it was worthwhile after I rear ended a woman who claimed she'd been there the whole time. Whole time my ass. I cleared a school zone, started accelerating with the lane clear far as I could see, looked down at the clock then back up and she was right there in front of me.

I haven't recorded any wrecks, other than one I got into where a woman entered my blind spot as I changed lanes. All you see is the car in front, me cussing, changing lanes, a bump, followed by me saying "Fuck" and pulling into a parking lot. I keep some of the stupid moves that it records in front of me.

In any event, now I know better, I'll be checking out the front and rear cameras with phone storage.

My one suggestion is to avoid the ones with the suction cup mounts. You can buy aftermarket fixed mounts if it doesn't come with them. Worth every nickel there.

  20. I use the Vaca Dash cam. Has auto start when someone touches your vehicle while in park. Has front and rear facing and sends data directly to your phone via Wi-Fi while driving and saving it on an SD card as well.

  21. Whatever you get, check to make sure it's actually recording. Daily.
The ones I have had over the years look great on the dash, and look like they're going what they're doing flawlessly...until you pull out the memory card and find out it's blank. Not a single file readable, even though it showed it had recorded everything up to the last 'incident'.
Bald eagle landing right in front of your truck to reposition it's freshly snagged rabbit? Nope, not there.
FEDEX truck running the stop sign and flipping you off when you hit the horn? Nope, not there.
Smoking hot drugged out redheaded chick dancing naked on the top of the car in front of you? Nope, not there and FOIA requests to the local PD have been returned 'no files found'.
Whatever you get, check it frequently to make sure it's actually doing what it's supposed to be doing.

  22. Expect that you will need to replace the SD card periodically -- continuous writes wear them out.

  23. I have a Thinkware U1000. Lots of bells and whistles and video looks good. Has GPS and phone app to view and change settings. You can view video on you phone or you can remove the SD card and view on your home computer. You can buy a radar sensor to detect anyone/anything approach you vehicle to start an "incident" recording, which will be saved until you delete it. You can buy Cloud space if you want to save all your recording as it happens, but I believe it will use your phone's data plan to do that. I just pull the SD card and take it into the house anytime there is something I might want to save.

  24. I have a couple a Transcend dashcams - I don't know if you can still get them. Front and back cameras, great video quality. The battery fried on one that I am replacing. Cost about $150 back in the day.

  25. From this vid there are apparently only a few sensor manufacturers. You are just paying for different cases. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AnyhHl3_tE
