Just a little note about things and changes....
So, like magic, my job position was "eliminated". Nice corporate way of saving money in the payroll and benefits side of things I guess. No HR issues. Never had performance review or serious criticism. Just the product of two cunts sucking each other off up front and fucking with peoples lives. My crew is/was shocked.
Needless to say , I kinda burned the bridge with the douchebag pencil pusher.

Sometimes a man just has to piss in his bosses toolbox and walk out . Did that twice in my career and it was a completely fulfilling experience . Old badass Karl said he was gonna kick my young ass [I was 27 years old] and I opened the back door for him and he wouldn't go out . All the other mechanics got together and bought me a couple cases of beer and brought them over on payday and we got drunk . I started a new job on Monday morning making much more money and much less work.

Apply for unemployment immediately, keep frosty, start looking and be open to doing stuff you might never have considered before. I have done this many times and in nearly every situation I get into things that are far better than where I was previously.

Had an uncle(WWII gen) who worked for Armour Meats. Laid off just before retirement age.
He did get another job, so it does work out.
And they wonder why we have no loyalty. Gotta give it to get it!

Besides I never knew how to manage up. Still don't.

In 2010 a fortune 500 company I worked for with over 25 years service decided they were leaving KS. I got a small severance and short continuance of bennies offered to me. I was recruited right away by a competitor and started there after my last day. Then I heard from the corrupt HR bastiches that they didn't know I would get another job and therefore would not uphold the promises of the severance.

DeleteA year ago in August I had to retire at 70 because I couldn't physically do my health care job anymore. At the time I was very unhappy about it, but I have stayed in touch with some co-workers and I am at peace with not being involved with the total shit show that health care has become. To a (wo)man they have expressed envy in my being able to walk (or hobble) away. When a company starts what you describe, the job usually becomes a slow descent into hell. One sign is that management numbers go up and worker numbers go down.

DeleteKarma exists and sometimes it's a boom. I worked for a firm that had an employee (Gladys) for almost 40 years. She had worked for 20 of those years for the worldwide managing partner. When he retired, Gladys was instantly on the radar by HR to be canned probably because she was about to be able to collect max retirement benefits. They understood optics of course. Canning a 40 year employee would not be viewed well by the staff. So they tried to give Gladys new jobs for which she had no training (despite having several positions Gladys could have easily transitioned into). Eventually the head of HR called Gladys in and told her she was fired at age 63. Gladys cried and asked how was she going to find another job at her age. Do you know what HR said to her? She told Gladys it was her own fault because she had a negative outlook. The woman told Gladys that she was looking at this the wrong way. Gladys should see this as an opportunity to discover something new. A new door so to speak. Gladys was out. Six months later, the HR woman was at a family gathering outdoors at a large suburban lot. Out of the blue, lightening struck a tree and a large branch was sheared off. The branch hit the HR woman and only her, killing her. Many employees of the firm hoped the HR woman took it in the right light as one door closing and another opening.

DeleteOh my God! Here's my story: Years back I worked for a major bottling company for almost 18 years. The manager of that facility conspired with other managers there to put me in the "trick bag". They falsified documents and date labeling machines behind my back to fire me. Two weeks later, he was in his tree stand during bow season. Must have fallen asleep or slipped because he was found hanged dead by his safety strap. The others involved were fired for various reasons. Karma IS a thing. Ohio Guy

ReplyDeleteseems to be an increasing trend here in new england towards older northwest european men. pencil pushers are convinces they can get low skilled people to learn jobs/trades by OJT with no interference from aforementioned older, northwest european men. unfortunately, pencil pushers are often the ones closing the doors, so they don't think it will affect them any. good luck. new england is hollowing out. i know personally of too many people moving south to find work. if you don't want to be a CNA or hotel maid, there will be fewer and fewer jobs here.

Happened to me a couple times. I worked for a multi-billion dollar company for four years. I won't say what I did, but when I was hired, the key metric for the group I was in was at 710. I was responsible for it. Three months before I got whacked, it bottomed out that 3. Then, after all the work was done, they 'restructured' and 'eliminated my job'.
Take 26 weeks of vacation on Uncle Joe and find something better.
And don't burn those bridges. INCINERATE THEM!!
Did they "perp walk" you out the side door to make sure you didn't walk off with a stapler? It sucks, I know, good luck and let us know if you need anything.

I have applied for a religious exemption because I believe abortion to be an abomination to God and EVERY COVID vax either uses harvested fetal tissue to be made (J&J) or in testing (all the rest). I electronically signed my vax survey yesterday with the addendum that I've applied for religious exemption. We'll see if it works. I'm not hopeful, though. Politically, vaxxing everyone has too much momentum. So, I might soon be an out of work Veterinarian, looking for a practice that will hire someone who hasn't practiced in 18 years. But, I DID keep my licensure current, cause, I thought, you never know. And we certainly didn't.

ReplyDeleteWalked of a job 10 years ago and it ended my career. In the moments I begin to doubt it was the right thing, I just have to recall how miserable I was and how crooked the boss/owner was. Cut my income 60%. But it led me into new areas and much more satisfaction. And in the end, financially, I’ve got all I need even though I’m now disabled. Developed independence and a frosty attitude. All is well. God took care of me.

I've only been fired once in my life. But it was a worthless job, and it was really my fault. Not worth fighting.
I worked a union job for 15 years. Gives you a little security, in exchange for union dues, that go somewhere mysterious. No union at my current employer, and I like that better.
These days, if I were laid off, I'd just retire. There is a real sense of relief at having that as a real option. Sometimes I wonder if I should just say fuckitall anyway and retire just cuz life is too short. Something to consider.
I feel you. I had my position eliminated after 12 years so my boss would get a company car. I had a couple more corporate jobs over the next 3 years, but my heart wasn't in it anymore, so I quit and started flipping houses. It was hard work, but very satisfying, and I was my own boss. Made less, sometimes a lot less, but there was never any bs office politics to deal with. I'm sure I would never go back to a corporate job.

Don’t take it personally. Don’t internalize it. When management lets someone go…50% of the time they let the wrong guy go. If you’re lucky. The hell of it is, the rest of the employees see it and wonder if they are next. Don’t get mad - it probably had nothing to do with you at all. It happens to everyone. I work there another 20 years and retired at the start of the Dem-panic. They contacted me two weeks ago and ask if I would come back on a part time basis to help with a project.

ReplyDeleteWell that sucks. Having had it happen to me three times in my working life, I know the the mixed emotions that accompany a job loss situation. The last two happened 22years and 13 years in. After the last I got another job immediately. After working there for three months and coming to understand what a god awful place it was because the managers were the worst of the worst and fostered a really unhealthy work environment, I decided at 61 years old I'd had enough of putting up with bullshit on daily basis for a paycheck. Never looked back.

From what I see of job offers in email, there's hundreds of jobs going unfilled in the PacNorWest, in the machine trades and elsewhere. If the rest of the country is the same, you won't be idled very long.

My plan was to retire this past July, big fuckcorp figured they could hire 2 young knownothings - that couldn't spell attendance much less showup - for less than me. So, retirement came in March. A bit early, but I have understood it as God giving me a few additional months to make sure my shit is together for the 'party' that's about to start. God bless and stay safe, brother.
