On The Reading List...

I finished the first two books of  "The Hunger Games" trilogy.. which were excellent so far by the way.

Since I am waiting to borrow book 3 I have decided to start reading an "On The Beach" by Nevil Shute.

I had to read this back in high school and don't really remember much about it.

I know they made a movie, but I have never seen it. I guess a rental will be on the agenda after I finish the book.

  1. "On The Beach" is an excellent novel, one that I also had to read in high school and didn't appreciate until later. "Native Son" was another one - talk about a window into a different time in American history...

It's a little dated, in that the Cold War is over and the nuclear threat is different now - we're not facing mututally assured destruction but asymmetric warfare which is a lot harder to wargame like MAD...

  2. The book is quite a bit different than the movie, but I recommend both.

  4. I read "On the Beach" and "Alas, Babylon" in high school. I remembered them later, when I was in the Air Force, assigned to the Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff at Offutt AFB in Omaha. I just re-read "On the Beach" two or three months ago. It's still as sobering as it was when I first read it.

  5. I'm so old they hadn't invented the printing press when I was in high school.

However, I did read On the beach later on and saw the movie as well Both were good.

Another "interesting" read is: "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. It was written in the 1930's but it's quite thought provoking.

  6. I, too, read "Alas, Babylon" in high-school, and got a paperback from Amazon not too long ago.
It was also broadcast as a "Playhouse 90" episode in 1960, and still remember seeing it.
