Arlington, somber place. I took my family there when the kids were 9 and 12. My 9 year old son saluted the guard coming off guard duty at the tomb of the Unknowns.
We took the guided tour where we had a lovely young lady as a guide. She told us she was a history major at Georgetown University and worked at Arlington as a co-op student. She was very knowledgeable of the history of Arlington. When we passed the graves of the Confederate soldiers she pointed out the headstones were the only ones that came to a point at Arlington. She then said, "the pointed headstone was used to keep the damn Yankees from sitting on them."
Things that scared Gen X? All I was scared of was dad's belt. I had a plan for everything else. Especially quick sand. That shit was everywhere according to the movies.
The actual quotation is "John Marshall [Chief Justice of the Supremes at the time] has made his decision, now let him enforce it." There is some question as to whether or not Jackson actually said it, but he almost certainly was thinking it because he did nothing to help enforce it (Worcester v. Georgia, 1832).
John Marshall should also be remembered for "presiding" over the prosecution of Arron Burr for treason, during which he successfully did everything in his power to thwart the prosecutor's efforts. That ain't necessarily how Wikipedia presents the episode, but well you know, Wikipedia........
It's "Lest Ye Forget".
