Day Before Yesterday

My daughter-in-law saw a buck on the side of the road near where I live and sent me this picture of it. The rut is just about to start where I live and this young'un kicked it off a little early.

I have been very busy and have not hunted. The days I could go, it was too hot, etc. I got to thinking with this cold front pushing though/it being "that time" and with lows around 20F that young man might be chasing does. I got into the woods the next morning about 6:30 and walked to a ridge just above where my DIL had spotted this deer. I saw three young deer with no antlers, but no bucks. I walked out around 9 and planned to go back about 2. My son goes back to the very spot where I had been around 11:30. He had been in the woods about 30 minutes when this gentleman showed. He shot the deer less than 100 yds. In the course of 5 years, my son has killed this one and two other 8 point bucks at the same spot, same time in the season, wearing the same doe piss (I'll have to get the name). He called when he shot it and I helped him get it home and skin it. It is not a monster, but a nice deer. We didn't weigh it, but I am guessing it would go 175+lbs. He was not too shabby for a public land deer and he will eat good.

    1. At the turn of the century deer and turkey were near extinction in the state of Alabama. In the late teens of the last century, outdoorsmen working with a small Department of Conservation began a re-stocking program of deer in the state. The deer were captured in Michigan and brought to Alabama then released. These deer are a sub-species of whitetail that grow off with larger bodies and horns than deer in LA (lower Alabama) and their rut hits earlier than the deer down south. You can google all of this and it is a very interesting history (Alabama National Forest/Bankhead).

    2. Yep the Great Depression was punishing in more ways than one. Most wildlife was killed out for meat as people were starving.

Hanging with my friend this week. Recently retired 32 year man from our Ok. Wildlife dept. Met him year and a half ago. Great man has added immensely to my wildlife knowledge.

My Uncle partnered with the dept. in the late 70’s. Live trapped deer in south Texas ranch, a friend of his place. Transported them to his ranch in Ok. Where my Dad was born on the prairie. Spent many a weekend riding, hunting quail, and fishing there. Growing up never saw deer or turkey till about 1980. He allowed no hunting till the mid 80’s. Killed a nice buck in 89. Now I see herds all over the place but can’t buck hunt anymore, to expensive via their outfitter program and I refuse to pay to hunt, which I’m okay with I was a quail hunter with the old man anyway.

  5. Thats a nice buck. I've always been a fan of the 'banker's hours' deer. Took a nice doe this past weekend. Feels good to have the freezer filled.
I'd love to know that fragrance he wears. I've still got a few weeks to try for some antlers.

  6. Is it not dangerous to venture into the woods smelling like the deer equivalent of a cougar trawling a university bar?

    1. No. The deer are less dangerous than the cougars.
No chance of pregnancy, and you generally don't get arrested for shooting them.

    2. Besides, commenting on their taste of 90s pop music and oaky Chardonnay will usually send them running……

    3. You have a problem with Cougars? Check out the whipped cream bikini fame smokin hot Alli Larter on Landman with Billy Bob Thornton on prime, and it’s funny as hell. Wish more tree huggers would watch it.
