1.5 Billion Dollar Lottery... A Cautionary Tale....

On the morning after she became a multi-millionaire, a South Carolina woman drove by the KC Mart No. 47 in Simpsonville where she bought her lottery ticket, to see if anyone was there, just in case she had made a mistake and didn’t really win. It was the largest Mega Millions jackpot to be won by a single ticket — more than $1.5 billion — and she had seen the numbers reported on television. “If no one was there, I would say, ‘okay, well this was a disaster, we made a mistake,’ and I’d drive home and all would be good. But as we went by the convenience store, there was every media — there was helicopters, there was every piece of media, there was locals, you know, national. I so badly wanted to get out of there, I wanted to go under the seat, I became anxious.”

With the Powerball jackpot so high be careful what you wish for. An SC winner’s cautionary tale

  1. I took some college courses in Statistics and Probability and figured decades ago the lure of millions is nothing more than a tax on the instant gratification reacting indigent.. I may be Irish and poor but I'm not stupid.

    1. But for $2 you get to dream a little while.
Much cheaper than going to the movies.

    2. If you buy a ticket for the LOLs you're not being stupid.

If you buy a ticket expecting win... you are.

$2 against half a billion payout is a good "oh what the heck" wager.

$200 a week for whatever the lottery is up to... Not so much.

Why in Gods name would you give total control, never mind the only access to your investments, to someone? I certainly wouldn't do that with an account having $2,000, never mind one with hundreds of millions of dollars.

When I win the big one next week, I want it ALL in $100 bills. I will then stuff it all in mattress's, so can't nobody cheat me out of it. :-)

OK. so maybe not a good plan. I'll just put it all in Mason jars and bury it in my yard. :-)

  6. A guy in Walmart this morning said he spent $100 on tickets yesterday and will again tomorrow. I asked how much he spent overall and he said over $2,000.
He asked me how many tickets I was getting. I said if I remember to get one I would get, one, and said that if God meant for me to win, one is all I need.
Checkout lady agreed with me and daddy-war-bucks looked mad.
I saw him getting into his car. He should have spent the money on repairs and tires instead of lottery.

If I won that lottery I'd buy 1000 acres in Montana and no one would ever see me again.

  8. i long ago asserted that the lottery was a state tax on covetousness. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

  10. The article said the husband was a lawyer. Apparently not a very smart one.

  11. According to the article, her husband is ... wait for it ... A LAWYER.

One would think that with that kind of education and experience, he'd at least be a little skeptical and do the investment, trust fund and charity work himself or at the very least have the law firm he was working at do it using people he knew and maybe trusted. But nnnoooooo.

Another big red flag, selecting the lawyer who's in the news promoting himself as the "lottery lawyer". That's an ambulance chaser made good.

Why wouldn't you go to your bank or a known large financial firm, like Fidelity, for their help in managing that money. That puts them on the hook, with public fiduciary responsibility, to manage your money and disburse funds as you direct. Not that some greedy SOB couldn't still steal it, but it's far less likely, IMHO.

Finally, why would you EVER allow anyone, other than yourself, to have control over that kind of wealth? That's like holding up a sign in Times Square, saying I'm rich, come and take it. That's how Bernie Madoff swindled hundreds of millions. You'd think people would pay attention to that kind of news. Yes, overseeing what happens to the funds becomes your new job. Maybe twenty hours a month. The rest of the time, you're swimming in a sea of money, like Scrooge McDuck.

  12. On the rare occasion that I buy a lottery ticket I avoid the mega-jackpot tickets and play the cash-for-life game. 200,000 or so a year after taxes is good enough for me.

  14. My dad said people spend their grocery money on that kind of stuff and he is correct. He voted against Avery state betting operation ever brought up. I did as well. Yes I bought lottery tickets but it’s been a few years now.
