Bullet Points For Those That Asked About The "Procedure"

Friday 1:00pm scheduled time.

Wednesday night had dinner and started fasting.

Worked on Thursday.

Drank black coffee and copious amounts of water all day.

I had to suffer through my co-workers ordering pizza during our meeting.

Per instructions I used a product called "GoLytely"

For me it worked well and the taste didn't bother me.

I recommend it.

Mix well with warm water Thursday AM then refrigerated to make ice cold.

Thursday PM start around 6-7PM drink 8 oz every 15-20 mins for 8 glasses.

This was, for what ever reason, easy for me.

I set my stopwatch to chime every 15 mins. I filled an 8oz glass

and left it on the shelf in the fridge next to the jug. Once I chugged it I would refill for the next go.

You drink half the jug the night before.

I made it through the 8 glasses without having to hit the head.

Over the hour or so after i finished, it worked. Fasting made it easier I think and baby wipes.

Once I felt that was over I showered and went to bed. Slept through the night

without incident.

According to the instructions, the day of procedure, you have to finish the other

half gallon. 8oz , 8 times every 15/20 mins.  This is started 5+ hours ahead so you are done

three hours before "go-time".

There were a few trips to the loo during and after drinking the morning dose,

but I was able to putter around and wait for the stop watch to chime.

They called around noon and said they were ahead of schedule and to come in early if I wished.

I got dropped off at 12:35 walked in, registered and was in the assless chaps  Johnny gown

fairly quickly.

Got vitals taken, 3 nurses were attending multiple things as well as other patients.

IT was high production.

Signed my life away to the DR. if he fucked up. I told him not to.

Ordered Ginger Ale and peanut butter crackers if I made it out alive.

The sedation was not full anesthesia. There were two drugs that they told me

they use. I THINK the first one was Midazolam and the other Fentanyl.

These were administered after I was rolled into the room.

Closed my eyes

Woke up in recovering feeling fine. Had two Ginger Ales and two packs of crackers.

No issues.

The nurse handed be a brochure of my procedure and explained about the small polyps.

one diverticulosis pocket and some internal small hemorrhoids.

I will get results when completed.

The staff was friendly and accommodating and I had no issues.

They were pretty firm about no alcohol for 24 hours.

The orderly came and wheel-chaired me to the front entrance.

The "Boss" and I went out to get some lunch.

Two chicken tacos, no hots.  I was craving a beer and settled on Heineken Zero for the taste mind you.

I also drank three large soda waters with lemon since I was feeling dehydrated.

By the time I got back to the bunker I felt fine.

Did some work around the house till the mosquitos drove me in.

Had some dinner, shower and slept all night until the cat wanted breakfast.

For me, the process wasn't bad. I'm busy and can't sit still so the night and morning of the

procedure was the hard part getting through drinking the GoLytly and waiting for

potential potty runs.

YMMV

  3. Fasting on a regular basis is a great way to cleanse bad stuff out of your system. It'll give you added mental clarity and retune your metabolism. The human body is not designed around eating 3 square a day, it's designed to store excess for use when food is not available. Fasting will reintroduce that natural balance.

  4. You know you're having a bad day when you visit the proctologist and you ask where you should put your pants and he says: "Oh just drop them on the floor next to mine."

  5. Sounds like this is your first one... your cherry is popped now. The whole procedure is not that difficult, it is the fasting and the powerful laxative which makes potty runs entertaining, especially when a loved cat or dog is in the way to the throne room. See my post this morning on your travails...

  6. That’s pretty much a normal experience. Dunno who came up with the name of of that prep stuff but “lytely” is definitely not an accurate descriptor.

  7. I had my first one last year. My family has a history of polyps, so I thought I was in trouble. Instead the pictures looked so good they said I didn't have to come back for 5 years.

Since I had never been under general anesthesia before I apologized to the nurses and staff ahead of time for any weirdness that may ensue. The anesthesiologist told me the drug they used was fact acting so you went under fast and came out fast with no hazy inbetween. When I came out the only thing EVERY nurse in the room said was "WOW! Your legs are crazy strong!" I like to toss and turn in my sleep and apparently I tried to do the same thing when I was under. They had to call in additional staff to hold me down.

  8. My last one, they discovered I was it atrial fibrillation, which makes me wonder where they stuck that probe.

I remarked to my CRNA son that the doc found the a-fib, and he swiftly informed me that most doctors don't even look at the monitor.

I've had a couple of those roto rooter procedures and have done the prep the old fashioned way and also the HyGieaCare way and the HyGieaCare way is the way to go. These places are usually right next door to the Gastroenterologist, so the only prep is fasting and a couple of Ducolax the day before. Check out the video on it. https://youtu.be/7b7ZyYajLI0 Highly recommended.

  10. I had my second one in early June. The first time, they found two polyps. This time, just one, and said come back in 5 years. For me, the cleanse seems like no real big deal. And one of the drugs that they used is propofol. It can be used for general anesthesia, or for what we used to call "twilight sleep", but what the doctors consider conscious sedation. That must be why they use it with colonoscopies.
It works so very quickly and leaves the body so very quickly as well. My wife had her first colonoscopy a number of years back, and they found a polyp, that was a bit different, like on some kind of a stalk, such that the doctor made a tattoo on the inside of her colon wall, with ink, so that when she had her next one, he could readily find the same spot, to make sure that it did not return. Her mom got colon cancer twice. But my wife has a clean bill of health, after two follow up colonoscopies over 10 years. We are grateful for that, since she did have breast cancer, but has now passed the 5 year mark, and had a mammogram last week, which was negative, as was her blood test. So she is doing well. God is good, all the time. Even when she was going through her treatments, I saw his hand, working to bless us.
Sorry for making this about myself and my wife, but sometimes, I just have to speak my thankfulness to God, for the extra time with my wife.
I am glad that things went well for you, of course, that must not be ignored, by any means. Wishing you many more years of good health, and happiness.

  11. Dad was given 'go lightly' and told to fill the jug with water and drink it all. No mention of a schedule of 8 oz per 15 min. so he drank it all in about an hour....You never heard so much cussing...[and I was in the Navy]. - Joe Heavy

  14. The best part for me was getting the gorgeous color pictures for "show-n-tell". And for the most hilarious account of the procedure, just look up the old column by Dave Barry.

  15. Having my 3rd upper/lower endoscopy in a few weeks.
It's not hard. Just drink the juice and stay near the john.
And laugh at the doc when he jokes about his shitty job...

  16. Been though 5 colonoscopies, and 4 endoscopes, same prep. I don't eat much but only a light dinner the night before prep. 3 Dulcolax about 4 pm and a lot of fluids. Sucks for about 2 hours then done. My grandfather beat colon cancer found early because of a colonoscopy, so I look at it as a necessary evil. I also have Crohn's disease, and every itis gut related. Last one this spring gut doc said I am good for 3 years

  17. Go-Lytely is the worst advertising lie in medicine.
But "Shit your Brains Out" didn't test well either.
Bill Engvall called it "Poopin' Juice".

SNL did a commercial for the cereal equivalent...

Midazolam is Versed. Great sedative. Also wipes your memory out retroactively starting a few minutes before they give it to you. Fentanyl is the actual short-acting pain reliever, not the garage-brew home-cooked poison.

    Another great procedural account:

  18. I have had two over 10 years always making them early morning. The prep of eating light the day before and then doing the Dulcolax flush and fluids as I would never sleep. The procedure with a sedative that makes my really drowsy and not feeling it when they do it. My wife handles me afterwards. The Doc has a stream of people each time I have been in that are having it done so he is making the money doing the butt.

  19. Back in the day, beer was considered a clear liquid. Then they changed the rules and prep is a little more tedious.
