Somebody's lyin' to ya - in the 50's the cost of gas was around 5 cents and didn't go tp double digits until the 60's. I remember in 64 my dad was ranting that gas went from 9 to 11 then 13 cents over two years. Early 60's.
I remember in 1961, when I was in high school and just starting to drive, we could buy $5 worth of gas and cruise all night with lots of gas left over for my mom to shop for groceries the next day.
There used to be a motorized device on Amazon that would cover a plate at the push of a button. Some dumbass in Newjoisee finally got busted and hammered.
In the early 60's I lived in Boston and I was in a car club that would run a car at the drag race in Sanford Maine. We usually drove up in three or four vehicles. The police would compare your ticket when you got on the "turnpike with the time when you got off and if your time was too fast they would write you a ticket. There was a Howard Johnson (I think, kinda fuzzy) halfway there so we would stop for coffee and/or breakfast so that we didn't get a ticket. It was a 1955 chevy, with a 327 with 2 4 barrel carbs that we raced.
Modern is not interesting nor pleasant to the eye.

ReplyDeleteA web search shows that in1950 the toll was 10-15 cents. A gallon of gas was 23 cents.
