Chevy Silverado Pickup Cab Separates From Frame in Bizarre ‘Rollover’ Crash

When body mounts go bad.

Police responding to a vehicle rollover call in southern New Hampshire yesterday were understandably surprised when they arrived on scene and discovered this bizarre sight:

A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup with its cab flipped forward onto its roof while the bed, frame, and all four wheels remained firmly attached to the ground.

According to the New Hampshire Union-Leader, 21-year-old Danielle Taylor was driving her truck when she felt the steering wheel “start to shake” moments before losing control and crashing near Pelham, NH.

The force of the impact apparently tore the truck’s body from its mounts, sending the entire cab, hood, fenders, and front clip flipping over the front bumper, kind of like the world’s least graceful gymnast on the uneven parallel bars.

Thankfully, Taylor was reportedly able to crawl out of the smashed cab and escaped with only minor injuries. And as much as this weird accident seems like perfect fodder for the never-ending Ford-Chevy pickup war, there are two likely culprits here.

The first is rust, which anyone who’s driven in New Hampshire will tell you is simply the status quo up there. The second possibility is a shoddy body lift, as the space between the rear wheel and fender arch is artificially big. Or, like many things in life, it was a combination of the two.

  1. Such rust problems will only increase as NH "Decided" to eliminate yearly safety inspections.

"Too much a burden on poor households to mandate inspections".

SHUDDER, given the number of "How the HELL did that get a sticker" cars I've seen at Walmart and such just the past few years.

    1. So NH safety inspections check body mounts?

My experience, in other states mind you, says they check lights, turn signals and cracked windshields.

But it sounds like NH does it better. lol

    2. Rust that weakens the structure of the vehicle is supposed to be a no go. My mechanic puts it on the rack for underbody inspection because NH is a salt using state.

Now sadly that's gone. More frame-body failures to make accidents more "interesting".

    3. Exactly, this had nothing to do with vehicle inspections. Get outta MA much?

    4. Anyone can still have their mechanic do the inspection, even if it is not required, and/or just keep the darn thing undercoated and properly serviced. Common sense and the NH State Patrol will take care of the rest. Ask yourself if you have ever been abused by your Inspection station. I sure as hell have. Also was a mechanic for a few years out of hi skool in the '70s.

Well, how fast was it going when all four wheels suddenly Attached themselves to the ground?

Look at the frame. There's a four inch gap,.. Daaayumm!. You know that was a ride.
Pulling the engine out is going to be a snap now.

    1. I've picked up a '99 extended cab with new transfer case and 130k on the 5.3l for $500 and a '00 with 4.8l and stick for $600 due to the frames cracking.

Happens right in front the driver's rear spring bumpstop, and by that time the crossmember tube holding the gas tank and the bottom of the frame next to the tank are both rotted away.

I think the 5.3l drivetrain and such will go into a squarebody, '84 Blazer with Dodge axles I have laying around.

  5. Somebody in that family, whether a husband, brother, dad, or boyfriend, is wondering if they tightened all the bolts. That, or regretting waiting one more winter to see about replacing their truck.

  6. Do to heavy salt usage, many Western PA drivers had a winter car and a summer car. My wife's cousin filled up his Camaro with gasoline causing the gas tank to detach from the vehicle. He was only a block from home so he drove the car there and came back for the gas tank.
