The Widow Maker...

During a hike yesterday, I crested a short rise and was greeted with this.

Sorry, no banana for reference, so the picture doesn't capture the true size of this.

Rough guess is the bottom of that trunk is 10-12 feet above the ground.

The trail passes directly under it.

I paused, listened for minute, then passed under it sticking to the side with

the larger tree.

The picture is taken showing the direction from which I had travelled.

No sign of Arnold or the Predator.

It's obviously been there a while but sooner or later gravity will change that.

  1. When it falls in the woods, do you think it will make any noise?

  2. Yep. The woods are full of little things that can really mess up a good day. Be alert, always, a sprain can be a death sentence. We've got grizzlies in the area I elk hunt, opens up a whole new dimension of caution.

  4. There's a course that they teach for wildland firefighters called "Look Up, Look Down, Look Around", specifically to pound it into new recruits to "Keep your head on a swivel."

  6. THAT is a widowmaker... Yes, always remember to look 'up'. Very few folks ever do that anywhere...

  7. How high up is the bottom of that trunk? I'm trying to get a feel for the size of things. Is that broken off piece 10 feet long or more like 30 ft? 50 ft? It looks like the widowmaker has some branch or something at the top that it's hanging from. Maybe that means it breaks first.

    1. 10-12 feet above the ground. It looks like a huge slingshot with a 'Y' at the top tangled in the branches of the other tree. Sooner or later it's coming down.
