Massive 600 lb. gator pulled from Alabama Waters
These photos were from the most recent State of Alabama Department of Fish and Game's sanctioned alligator hunts that took place this past week. There is a registration period that opens up and prospective hunters may register. After registration closes, applicants are selected by lottery at a later date. The hunts are at night and closely monitored by the F&G officers. My son has done this a couple of times and he and his "team" caught large gators during both hunts.

DeleteWent on the first gator hunt South Carolina had years ago, got a 500+lb one. Have no desire to do it again.

ReplyDeleteI had a 10 acre pond on the property behind mine and had two gators in it. I used to take the offal and skins and heads back there when I sold a goat and they butchered them there. I took them back in a wheel barrow and if they were on the other side of the pond I used to dump at the water line, if they were close, I would dump on the trail and skedaddle as fast as my feet could as they are fast and I didn't want to be a entree...

DeleteThey sort of follow a square ratio - you practically could shoplift a 10 footer but a 12 footer will be about half as heavy again and an 14 footer would need a forklift to move.
DeleteIn other words, the weight increases dramatically with small increases in length once they are adults. This goes for Nile crocodiles but I don't suppose that alligators would differ from that rule of thumb.

ReplyDeleteSometimes, one of those beasts crawl onto the wrong property in Florida, Alabama, and probably Louisiana, and gets his come-to-'gator-Jesus early.
Buddy of mine in south Loozy-anna had a gator crawl into the conveyor tunnel under his rice bins a while back. I asked him what did he do and he said, oh, we got him out. And then what? We ate him. Did ya call the game warden? He kinda snickered and asked, what for?

ReplyDeleteIf anyone's interested, there's a show on the History Channel called Swamp People that depicts alligator hunting during the Louisiana open season. There's a lot of drama, but they do catch a chit load of alligators, some big ones over 10 ft. Most are in the 6-9 ft range. Each boat team averages about 100 gators a season. They sell the gators to a broker who skins and processes the meat for sale to restaurants and some grocery stores. The new show season starts in January, I think. Some of these people also hunt pythons in the Everglades. Lots of drama in that show. Swamp People: Serpent Invasion is the name of it.

My grandson “sniped” one a few years ago and had the hide mounted. The plywood behind the mount curved just a bit after mounting as the skin continued to shrink. It is one of the most spectacular mounts I have ever seen.

My son stored the hide and feet of one of the Alligators they caught in our garage deep freezer.. About 4 months later while we were gone camping for a week, the freezer broke down and everything inside spoiled. Talk about a mess! I had planned to cure it and make not a wall mount. Maybe next year.
