Sorry for the light posting. I've been camping since last Tuesday.
The photos below are all "stock" pictures, but this is where I went. It was semi-primitive with no running water or other hook-ups. The middle photo is from an old vintage post card, but it is about where we pitched our tent. The dam, picnic area, and campground were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during The Great Depression. My granddaddy helped build that dam (1934-35???). Anyhow, the weather was great with lows in the 40's in the mornings and mid-70's by noon. A fun time was had by all!
Most of the old timers in my family worked on those same CCC projects . It paid better than stealing coal off of freight cars .

DeleteOr, cutting an hewing crossties for ten cents apiece! Many of the old-timers in my my family had worked in the program as young men too. Those CCC boys didn't realize they were being prepped for military life (uniforms, barracks inspections, close order drill using shovels instead of guns, etc.). The NAZI party was essentially doing the same thing to gain support, train men, boost morale, and pull Germany out of the Depression.

The CCC program also caused a huge controversy with commie John Lewis and his union thugs who had supported FDR. CCC furnished food, clothing, housing, and ONE yankee dollar a day wages. This was more pay than many if the "union" jobs paid at that time.

ReplyDeleteBest time of year for camping, IMHO. Not too hot for hiking, not too cold at night to where you wake up with frost on the inside of your tent!
ReplyDeleteNowadays, though, I just fire up the motor home and head north-northeast to the Kaniksu forest or western Montana. The firs here in the PNW just don't have the riot of color that the Eastern forests have.
October: warm hazy days, crisp nights, the smell of dried leaves, the glorious color change from deep green to orange, red, purple & violet. The beginning of fall, from wonderful color, to drab wet browns, to monochromatic winter. The best month of the year.
