On y first trip to Yellowstone in 1976, I saw an Asian lady throw rocks at a Bison..trying to make it stand up. It did and boy was it pissed...gored her to death! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
I've been to Yellowstone two or three times so far this year before schools were out. Won't go again until after Labor Day when the levels of stupidity drop a bit. Helpful hint: Never put your child on top of a bison for a picture. (Others beside me have seen this)
I've been to most of our great nations national parks over the last thirty years. You would not believe the stupidity of the general public, I once had to stop a couple from taking there children to sit on a elks back so they could take a picture, hell I got into yelling match with the father because he knew it was ok, only when a ranger came over to find out what the problem was did the asshole finally get a clue. The Asians and Europeans are the worst it's like they have never seen a wild creature in their lives and want to be best friend and want a hug. I stopped warning all of them and just sit back and watch stupid take place any more unless a child is involved that's the only time I step in any more.
Was in Yellowstone a couple of years ago, walking on a boardwalks past geysers and steaming pools, with a small herd of bison nearby made up a a bull, several cows and a few calves. A cow decided to cross the boardwalk in front of me, so I pulled up to let her pass. A woman in her fifties walked right past me and right in the front of the cow. There was barely room from the woman to pass the cow without stepping off the boardwalk. The cow was stopped half on the boardwalk, half off, back legs on the ground. She snorted in obvious agitation when the woman got so close and the bull, which was close by, suddenly became REALLY interested in what was going on. I truly thought that woman was about to be trampled. But she kept blissfully walking, completely ignorant of the danger she had just dodged.
Several people made open comments about the woman's blatant stupidity. Her husband made one meager effort to defend her, but was told by a group to reign his wife in before something bad happened to her.
Had a clown from New Jersey (he parked next to us) want to go pet the Bison. This big mo fu was laying down chewing cud at the time. Around the time I told my friend " We are about to see a guy die" the Bison let out a snort and the clown from Jersey finally took the clue and reversed course.
Bison Elk and other Glamorous megafauna (Yes it is a real word) are the reason they make telephoto lenses. It used to be that people blamed the Disney animal documentaries for tourists being stupid. But now that they have not been shown now for decades. It has to be Darwinism at its outdoor finest. It is getting time for the bison mating season so look for more of this stupidity in the near future
Bison are quick and athletic. They can out run a good horse. People who train cutting horses use young ones for training. I haven't looked, but I bet there are U tube videos.
Bison walk through fences and will take on a Peterbilt on the interstate. Any adult that messes with one is looking for a Darwin Award. Kids should be kept away. BTW, a lot of cattle - bulls, cows and some steers will toss you as soon as look at you, too. Ask any rancher, ranch kid.
I remember a ranger at a Yellowstone campground telling the audience about a woman who smeared cake icing on her kid's face so she could take a photo of a bear licking off the icing. This trip to Yellowstone was in 1968 or so.
A coworker who once worked at Yellowstone said a tourist put her toddler on a cub for a photo. Mama bear decapitated the toddler. Ignorant people do stupid things. Unfortunately our country is full of them.
tough way to learn a lesson.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the "adults" that just left her?
ReplyDeleteBuffalo having a bad day. We can't be in a good mood all the time.
