Car Motor Forensics...

Anybody want to try and identify this motor?

There was a bad crash at the toll plaza in Merrimack NH earlier today, Looks like the car disintegrated.

Police said the driver was speeding at the time of the crash. New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Steve Callinan said police received a number of calls about an erratic driver on the Everett Turnpike before the crash.

  1. It's a DOHC straight six with individual coils on each plug, therefore fairly modern. Only BMW and Mercedes-Benz make sixes for cars. So a little searching and here we are.

The cylinder sticking out of the cam cover is a camshaft actuator which is part of BMW's VANOS variable valve system.
This engine was used in just everything BMW made in the last 10 years with a 2.3, 2.5 or 3.0 litre engine. From the height of what's under the tarp, I'm guessing a Z4.

    1. Damn Al, I think you got it. I'll watch the local news and see what, if anything, comes of it.

    2. At that speed it can split the car in pieces. Years ago we had a Dodge Super Bee hit a tree at an estimated 120 (in a 30 mph zone) with six people in it. Body parts scattered all over Hell's Half Acre.

    3. I'm talking human body parts. They put it on a flat bed and toured all the high schools to show teens what happens you get get stupid. They were pulling fingers and other odds n' ends out of that wreckage for months.

  3. Here is an update:

Looks like it was an 06 BMW

MERRIMACK — One person died on Thursday after their vehicle crashed into an Everett Turnpike tollbooth at Exit 11 and burst into flames.

The fatal accident closed the southbound toll area at Exit 11 for hours Thursday afternoon as police and fire officials investigated.

The red 2006 BMW was damaged so severely that debris from the crash spewed onto the highway and toll plaza. The driver was not identified, pending notification of family members. -
