  1. C'mon over to the Great White Northern Plains, especially near the Canuk border, where it snows sideways at -25 to -40.

  5. I wish I was with my parents in coastal MA this weekend. I always loved storms like this.

  6. Used to live back there. Now live in Arizona. IT was quite cold this morning; high 50's. It has warmed up into the 70's and beautiful blue sky. There is some snow further North but I think I will stay here where the windchill is 72 degrees today.

  7. During the Blizzard of '78, I was skiing in VT with a friend. We had the week off. Most beautiful thigh deep powder I've ever seen everywhere we skied that week. I was riding up The Peak chair on Killington and a guy below us fell. He disappeared in snow and when he righted himself only his head was above the snow. In the meantime, we're listening to radio reports at night of MA, CT and RI being shut down and laughing our asses off. A week or so later I went to visit my parents who lived in central MA. There was 5 feet of snow in their front and back yard.

So this storm is probably going to be a trifle compared to that and other winters that I have experienced. I remember a couple of winters when I was a kid where it would snow for three or four days at a time a week or so apart. When the storms ended end of Feb early Mar there'd be 4-5 feet of snow on the ground and it wasn't that dry, fluffy shit they get out West. Good old New England boiler plate, which is wet snow that freezes into iron when the temps drop after the low goes by and sweeps in Arctic air behind it.

Anyway the beer is cold and the booze is stocked. I just hope the power doesn't go out. That will suck.

  9. We timed it well on my boat. Pulled into the deepest corner in a protected berth at Brooklyn Bridge Park with warehouses on either side. Put out extra mooring lines. Been a bit since we had a good 'un.

  11. In 1963 when I was 19 A couple of friends and I went to Boston to party on a Friday night. We took two cars because my house was West of Boston and their home was North of Boston. Around 11 PM it began to snow. Around 2 AM we decided to head home. By then it was 12 degrees, windy and had about 6 inches of snow on the ground. I headed West by myself in my car and misjudged a turn and hit the left side curb hard enough to break the lower A arm on the front suspension. I could drive it very slowly straight with the wheel turned to the right and I could make a right by backing up which swung the front around to the right. So I got it parked on a side street and began to walk. Did I mention I was wearing penny loafers and a light sports coat? Anyway after a mile or two I found an open gas station and tried to get a tow truck but those that answered wouldn't come out until the storm was over. SO than I tried for a cab with the same bad luck. So being 20 and invincible I began the 18 mile walk home. I walked for some 4-5 hours without seeing another vehicle or another open business and the snow was now over a foot deep. I was thirsty walking a country two lane and saw a small bridge and decided to grab a drink from the little stream. I had to lie down and drink right from the stream and for a second thought about just lying there for awhile. But I didn't, got up, kept walking. I got home something in the late AM, not sure when; 9-10AM maybe. Went to bed and slept for 8 hours. Two feet of snow total in that blizzard. My shoes were destroyed but luckily my feet were OK. Just dumb luck and youthful strength saved my life. Since then I have never left the house in the winter without a coat either on me or in the car.
