Back In The Day - Men, Real Men _ and a New Proof Editor...

This post by NWS Boston was on my twitter feed last night:

That sent me off to look for some time lapse videos of lake effect snow. This one video caught

my attention..

This video from 1939 in New York State provides a look at the way winter operations were performed over 70  80 years ago.

  1. Good old freakin' American ingenuity making those snow plows.
That Charlie guy had to have been one extremely popular guy.

    As for the cat,
    Hail Caesar!

  3. More good work done by a few men in overalls than a battalion of assholes in shiny suits.

  4. Tuxies are cool.
Most of the ferals that came to call Casa CC home have been tuxies; one gray & white that I rescued from getting torn up by dogs.
He's a lovable critter with a very loud purr every time he sees me.

  5. The dogs woke me up this morning to tell me they "had to go". 12 degrees here in SE Ohio. After throwin' a log or two in the woodburner and makin' a pot of coffee, I watched this piece of plowing history. Great find Irish. Reminds me of the blizzard of 1977. IH, Caterpillar, and John Deer, today, make moving snow like that, childs play. Hardy men back in the day, eh! Ohio Guy

    2. Winter of 76/77, we hardly had a wrestling match due to the weather, my senior year. Winter of 77/78 was, reportedly, worse, but since I was by then stationed in Kodiak Ak, I had small sympathy for the folks at home....

    3. Indeed, the "White Tornados" that were used on the flight line in Minot AFB were beasts! They were capable of (and, in one case, DID) swallowing a car and spitting out parts. That particular time somebody left a VW bug parked on a Base Housing street, it drifted over it, and the owners did NOT remove it nor tag/flag it. It played merry hell on the impeller when it tried to chew on the engine block... My Father-In-Law attested to the that, he was a Facility Management 5-striper that verified the sad tale!

  7. Today there's a virtual army of snowplows dedicated to O'Hara airport. With its expansion of runways since the 1967 big blizzard, a big part of the removal is hauling the snow somewhere out of the way.

  8. My seventh-grade science teacher was a Florida native who grew up in a commercial fishing family. Got his teaching creds and his first job was in Buffalo, NY. He could not understand why the house he rented had a snowmobile garage on the second floor. Until he experienced lake effect snow. And he suddenly found out why the house was so cheap and available to rent.

  9. If you want to read something interesting look up the life of loggers in the mid and late 1800's. Incredibly fit, strong and dangerous lifestyle. The bar fights were legendary and brutal. I used to go to a logger bar up in the mountains of Idaho, the wood floor was completely tore up from the corks on the soles of the loggers boots. Barstools legs were wearing holes down into the floor because they had been there so long. A lost place of history.

  11. Hail Caesar!

May your reign be a long and glorious one.
May loving hands and a comfortable lap be always at your disposal.
May your catnip toys be numerous.
May your food bowl never be empty.
May your litter box be always freshly scooped.

  14. Hard men doing hard work, a good reminder of how easy we have it today. I think I'll be staying in Texas a bit longer since its 60-70F down here.
