In Two Hours They Will Test The EAS System.....

What are your thoughts on this?

 Okay, my first thoughts are:

Do we need a "National" Emergency Alert System/?

Aren't most emergencies local?

Don't The Cable News Networks Already Preempt Programs
with important stories?

I can understand if the super volcano under yellowstone was due to erupt, or an asteroid or comet was going to hit the United States, or we were going to be attacked by aliens, you know something that would affect MOST of the country but other than that I don't see the need to warn the whole country about an emergency that would only affect a small percentage of the population.

Look what the cables news shows did on 9/11  everyone was transfixed to the TV and the internet
all across the world. They instantaneously brought us live coverage of that. What was the GOV gonna do? Warn us that there were alot more planes and scared the beejesus out of all of us?
The news did a good enough job of it.

When there is flooding, or hurricanes, or tornadoes, or tsunamis aren't they all localized
considering the scope of the disaster to the size of the country?

I guess I just don't see what this will accomplish or what it will be used for.....

That is all....

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are spearheading an aggressive public education campaign reminding Americans not to panic when they lose television and radio service for a few minutes on Wednesday during a test of the Emergency Alert System.

Although the public alert mechanism is decades old and often tested and used at the local level, it has never before been tested on a nationwide scale.

This first-ever test will occur at 2:00pm EST on Wednesday, November 9 and will occur simultaneously across the U.S. and its territories, lasting up to three-and-a-half-minutes.

  1. I think they will use it to announce that obama has declared martial law and there won't be a 2012 election. When your policies suck and piss people off and you don't stand a chance in an election, there are other ways to hang on to power...

Yes, it is obvious that the only reason to do this is to have the sheeple accept a total state blackout of TV and radio in order to broadcast propaganda, i.e., "We are the Borg and resistance is futile", or "All citizens are hereby ordered by the Supreme Authority to < fill in the blank > )
The internet power provision should make that more challenging, although they are working on it.

Of course, the unintended consequence is that this would be a plain signal to the rest of us, that it is time to lock and load and get out your list of targets, you flow chart, and head out the door to restore the Republic.

  3. I read your blog quite a bit and find some of the points made pretty interesting... but... I would have to think.. aside the colorful commentary... that when the emergency really hits.. the 911x10 and people are looking for any informaition.. that the system will have merit.

I was close when 911 occurred... close enough to have watched it from the window of my workplace.. and I can tell you, if i had a broadcast which spewed information instead of the helpless feeling of not knowing, no phone and no info -good, bad or ugly, Republican or Democrat sponsored.. I would have taken it and apperiated it..

  4. @ J3 - with respect - we all remember 9-11 too clearly ( what a hideous memory!) but did you not get enough info via the regular TV and radio channels? In most of the country, every channel had coverage, TV and radio, as well as internet updates.

The problem that everyone has with this nationalistic / state controlled news setup is, the only possible reason for it would be so that the people could only get the ONE version of any events... the official Party Line.

an old political truth used by both Stalinists / Marxists and Nazis - if you control what is said by all media, then you will control what the people see, hear, think and believe. So, ONE newspaper, ONE radio, ONE TV to say always whatever the government wants it to say!

That is the problem; we do not need a 'one official government voice' propaganda mill, and it is not likely that if anything of a major disaster should happen, that our normal radio, TV or internet channels would all be blissfully unaware.

  5. @ParaPecm - Respect taken and given... I hear your point and am a pretty well read guy.. I do not feel or believe my opinion has more or less merit then anothers - but I can say - I was a member of a rescue squad for a few yrs and I can tell you a national centralized alert/ dispatch/ system for the public is and has merit...

seriously - I even get your point about government interaction, cotnrol, what have you.. and I am not a drinker of the coolaid by any strecth.. but i do try to look at the trees from the forest per say..Not every thing is a plot by the thought police....

with that said.. lets get a rule 5 posintg from PISSED and have have a beer and comiserate

  6. Why?
Because when they trigger the "national system", **ALL** OTHER PROGRAMMING IS ENDED!

In other words, the Fed.gov can now take over **ALL** airwaves - INCLUDING your (and MY) high-$$ satellite-radio SIMPLY BY THROWING A SWITCH!
