Seriously fortunate that the vehicle drivers were paying attention & traffic was light. One person on their cell phone could have changed the whole outcome.
IIRC he had a fuel management issue and decided to land as a precaution. Pilot failure but a good landing. The engine was running at full power when another pilot took off a few hours later. This was not a dead stick landing, it was a scared pilot who fucked up deciding to land to make sure he didn't screw up again. He put the people in the cars at risk for nothing.
IF, and I said, IF I ever encounter something like this, I have already programmed myself to swerve across all lanes and slow traffic until the plane has stopped rolling and then assist in getting it off of the highway. I would also block cars from approaching it by putting my car between oncoming traffic and the plane. You should see the cost of a plane (even a used one, like this Cessna (172??) ) nowadays, a used one can easily cost $200K. No dings allowed.
Of course, if it's a crash, other plans go into effect and my First Responder mini-training goes into effect. It sucks, but whatcha gonna do??
A nice no power landing. I suspect the people on that plane could use a change of underwear though.

Broken throttle cable? The engine was obviously running until the pilot shut it down so it wasn't fuel starvation or complete engine failure.
ReplyDeleteAvoided wires at least twice... great piloting
ReplyDeleteat least he stopped at the stop sign

I agree, from what I can tell from the video.
DeleteNot necessarily for nothing.
DeleteBetter that he say, "I think I have a problem, I'll land on this highway"
then, "OH SHIT, WE'RE GOING DOWN!"
