Happened to friend of mine on vacation a few hundred miles away from home, only he was on I-95 when the tire crashed into his windshield. He and his wife were OK but the car was totaled and they had to cancel the rest of vacation.
Watched that happen 50 years ago in Tipton, Birmingham, England. 4 axle Atkinson rigid (extensive steel in Birmingham in those days) i was following the whole brake hub complete with pair of wheels detached, wheels hit a kerb and bounced high in the air, came down on the windscreen and roof of a Hillman Hunter car, which unfortunately had recently had a new windscreen fitted, which meant the poor woman driving whilst thankfully otherwise unhurt was covered in screen sealant. It was scary enough to witness let alone be under what must have been 800lbs of tyres wheels brake drum and hub.
I went on to drive full sized trucks, some 47 years now, never lost a wheel but can still see the above event in my mind as if it was yesterday.
Happened to me. The mechanic had just replaced the winter tires with summer ones. Was driving my route, felt a bump and was passed by my two driver side rears. Fortunately no cars were hit but one guys mailbox got vaporized.
Back when I was about 6 or 7 years old my mom (I was standing beside her) just finished putting coins in a Detroit road parking meter when a truck wheel dropped out of the sky and hit the top of the meter. Bent the meter pole like this: > , bounced up and came back downin a second or two on the hood of my parents '56 Olds. Demolished the hood and then continued on down the street. It traumatized my mom! I was just a kid not realizing the danger we just avoided...We were both very lucky that day!!
Last year, going down the highway and saw a truck on the inside shoulder with his left axle dragging. Passed him to see the missing tire heading down the shoulder at 60. Far as I know it missed everyone, but damn!
Ten years ago, on a highway and out of the corner of my eye see a car on the on ramp pop into the air and do a 180. Then saw one of their tires bounce across the grassy area and enter the traffic flow. People managed to avoid it until it hit the median wall, started back across at greatly reduced speed and finally in front of a pickup who'd managed to slow almost all the way down. Happily, just a bump for him, but scared hell out of a lot of people.

ReplyDeleteLook at the bright side.He ain't hurt, he gets another car, AND he got a day off from work with a built in excuse to get plowed.
ReplyDeleteSon driving his truck to work noticed a tire bouncing past him and onto the median. Turned out it was his. Didn't quite tighten down those lug nuts.
