After paying what they did for that thing, makes sense. You really only rent that car. If Tesla decides to, they will turn off fast charging, updates, service, parts... whatever. Getting involved with them is insanity. 'Sum Dood' over in NJ has a yt channel detailing what it takes to fix one and get it back in the matrix once Tesla deems it totaled.
The brother of a guy I knew in college was a machinist. He had a piece of HSS on his key chain. He'd roll a curl of steel out when he "keyed" a car.
This is the behavior of someone who really can't afford the car. This car is for people who won't mind taking it in to be serviced and have the dings worked on every couple of months. So they buy a really expensive car to virtue signal and humble-brag how rich they are, and then show the public that they really shouldn't have.
I've always painted my own cars.I know how much work it takes because I've done it many times.Mine are many years older than any Tesla,not fancy or high dollar vehicles,but I keep them because I like American,well built cars that last.The only reason I don't have pool noodle protection is that I park away from the stores,but some people think it's funny to park really close to you when you do that.Maybe I need pool noodles.It's cheaper than one guy's solution i've heard of,welding chrome plated angle iron on the sides of his car.You should see the idiots' faces when they open their rice-burners' doors into that.
I lifted my jeep, put 35" tires on it, and big rock slider bars. The tires stick out 2" beyond the fenders. It keeps MOST door dings at bay. I got my one and only rock chi from the neighbors 2 doors down. They were in a messy divorce and the wife was out running his 5000 dollar big mower through the rock border around their lawn. I took a rock from that, but was able to get it fixed. That mower, however, was rough.
When I bought my first and ONLY new car, I practiced "defensive parking." I remember one time, parking my car WAAAY out in the parking lot of a "big box" store. When I came out, I saw a shopping cart on the roll, going downhill. That damned cart went all the way down and across that parking lot and found my car!!! There were no other cars around it!!!! Car-ma?...
I did the same thing once. Always parked in the back of the lot away from all other cars. Sureasell, almost everytime some asshole parked right next to me with 500 emply spaces around me. Quit doing it. Cars are going to get dinged. That's life.
Teslas are targeted cars. Watch some of the Wham Bam Tesla Cam videos on YouTube. Besides accidents, these cars suffer a lot of intentional damage, which is recorded by the multiple cameras mounted all around the car. And what looks like a simple fender ding is going to cost $20k to fix.
I think the Tesla is a unique vehicle, and I do think it sucks that it's acquired such a stigma that people are azzoles about one-on both sides of the electric fence. But then, I'm a car guy, not a people guy.
