I've found, after doing a Whisky Trail in Scotland, that living in Southern California, I may not need the ice, but I need something to cool the whisky just a bit to something closer to what was intended as the sipping temperature. But I agree, ice WILL dilute the flavor.
I've drank that!

I've always been quite fond of Jameson myself. Of course Bushmills will work in a pinch.
