The painting is reminiscent of the style of Bierstadt. He painted many western scenes, including Yosemite and the Grand Tetons, with light being reflected off of clouds in this way. A lot of art critics, who never had set foot outside of New York and Boston ridiculed his work, claiming that light did not behave that way. If those no-talent hacks had ever visited the west, they would have found out that light, in fact, behaves exactly that way, when reflected between several towering thunderheads.
