I Won't Be Going To Jasper Anytime Soon

JASPER, Ala. (WBRC) - The city of Jasper is stepping up it’s mask enforcement policy by issuing tickets for not wearing a mask.

“Everybody has been fairly compliant when we ask them," Jasper Pickers Owner Greg Faulkner said. “Most people have been very comfortable with that. We’ve had a few, they tell us that they have a medical condition and we just say 'okay, hope you stay safe."

“We make announcements periodically and ask everyone to make sure they stay six feet apart and wear masks,” Faulkner said.

But, Jasper Mayor David O' Mary said some people are not adhering to the mask mandate. He gave a weekly update on the city website and addressed it.

"We have had people that have been very defiant with our police officers about the mask order,“ Mayor O’ Mary said. “Defiant to the point of telling our officers to go fly a kite and paying our officers no attention.”

Mayor O' Mary said Jasper police will be ticketing those who refuse to wear a mask.

“The city of Jasper has no desire to put a hardship on you and cost you money, but if you do elect to be defiant of the law, then we will have no choice but to give you a citation," O' Mary said.

Mayor O' Mary said that citation could cost up to $500. He said police will only issue tickets if a person refuses after being asked first by the officer.

“In small town Alabama, people are still going to try and ignore it," resident Josh Nation said. “It’ll just depend on how serious they are about enforcing it.”

“I don’t think it is going to matter," Faulkner said. “I mean as much as everybody is wearing these everywhere, if they aren’t going to wear it then they aren’t going to wear it.”

The statewide mask mandate is set to be re-evaluated on October 2nd where it could be extended.

  1. Was a law passed about face masks? It seems somehow that people get confused about a law and a "mandate" or executive order. How are these mandates or fines or associated harassment codified in law? I sure don't know. What legal recourse do you have? Are you arrested? Do they read you your rights? Even a speeding ticket has due process associated with it. No wonder people are defiant.

    1. The mayor of my city was sued in state court over his mandatory masks in all public buildings order. Guess what? The mayor's order was upheld as necessary for the safety of all citizens. Never mind the fact that Fauci brazenly lied in February when he said that masks don't halt the spread, but masks are worn by health care workers to prevent them from getting sick or when it was revealed that, with the exception of N95 masks, most masks aren't fine enough filters to stop the virus from getting into your respiratory system. How about those clear plastic face shields that are open to the air on both sides and bottom? What in God's creation are they preventing?

  2. Sounds like Mayor O'Mary and whichever law enforcement official that goes along with this may very well end up on someone's personal accountability list.

  3. Is that a democrat city? They're doing it in Miami, among the bluest cities in Florida. I get the feeling it's mostly for fundraising, but it's still tyranny.

  6. A mandate is not a law;a mandate is illegal. You have the right to not comply based on your medical condition or your religious beliefs.

    1. I attended a local Jr. High football game last night with all the signage and periodic public address systems about the State of Alabama requires, blah, blah, blah, and I didn't even have to wear a mask to get into the gate. Nobody was wearing them. People are tired of this BS.
