PSA for recall of Harbor Freight Jack Stands...

This is for the adults since most kids nowadays wouldn't know a jack stand from a shovel or a rake or a lawnmower or a hammer or some guy named Manual Labor .....

Anyway, kidding aside, Phil wanted to pass along this IMPORTANT RECALL to keep us old farts safe.

It seems the HF Jacks Stands are suffering some CCPvirus as well.

As a electrician, the new guys ask me how much should they spend on a meter. They can run from a few dollars, to several hundred. "How much is your life worth"
    is the answer.

    1. I still have my 1st meter, it was a kit one. You had to assemble it yourself and even solder the tesisters to the board. Nice little unit, it was goven too me as a 10 year old by our neighbor since he knew i loved electronics.

I'm pretty sure it was used as a training tool in the military, but i doubt they teach that way anymore.

We had a US company a couple years ago send us a y-strainer for the HP steam line wete i work. Special order as it was 2 and a 1/4;chrome steel. Going through the WA package we realized it was made in china. The hydrotest teport had a date 2 years before the mtr from the foundary for the ingot pour. The forging certificate of dimensional tolerance was date 10 years prior to both the other two.... and it was cast not forged.
We decided to hydrotest it ourselves before install. It was designed for 3000 psi. Well at 80psi -city water pressure; it had 6 worm holes pissibg water. Looked like a porcupine.

  2. There is a Harbor Freight near me, when I have gone in there, the smell of the place is unlike any other place I have been. Perhaps people know the smell when you open a box of something made in China.
In a weak moment I bought a small air compressor there, and after running it for a couple of minutes, I couldn't believe how loud it was, so back it went. To their credit the refund was easy, but I don't think I have purchased anything from them since.Maybe there are some good things they sell, I just haven't seen them.

  3. My jack stands are 10 and 20+ years old - no worries.

    1. Yeah, even though mine look almost exactly like the ones in the picture they are nowhere near the Pittsburgh "quality". Been using 'em over a decade now, no worries.

  4. Cheap junk. I'm surprised they don't sell Yugo's.

  5. The smell of rubber that is made in China is very strong, and seems to take forever to go away.
I purchase products from Harbor Freight with the purpose of only using it for a specific project, since most of their tools don't last beyond the duration of one of my projects. If it is a tool that I think might get used beyond one project, I will spend the extra money to get a better product.

  6. It would be safer using a cinder block. There is nothing but junk in that store.

  7. I always leave a floor jack up and in place when under a vehicle. Have a set of those stands, and have never had a problem.

  8. Some really stupid reasons some here defend buying garbage from China. Are you brain dead? Do you not realize what the hell China has unleashed onto the entire world? And you still want to support the CCP and buy from them? Amazing. You buy chinese garbage...that makes you un-American and a traitor, period. Now stop it buy from ANYWHERE else, sheesh.

    1. Hate to break it to you, sport, but even if you buy elsewhere, the fine little print on it usually reads...
      wait for it...
      "Made in China"

    2. Which is why you inquire from the company in case it is not obvious of where it was made. Do your own research, it sometimes a pain in the rear but worth it. Don't be lazy, complain nicely to the companies as to why you are not buying their products. I have had conversations with a few companies and they were actually sympathetic to my view and said hopefully OTHERS out there would voice their opinions and change the way we buy things. Open your eyes and you will find stuff from elsewhere, sport.

  9. I remember the day when I would frown on stuff made in Mexico. Nowadays, I would take Made in Mexico over China any day, but it is hard to find with smaller stuff like auto parts and tools.

A few years ago I saw a Chinese made extension cord at one of the big boxes-it had a bogus looking "safety" seal of approval that was intended to look sort of like a UL label. What a fucking crock.

  10. I bought mine years ago and checked the model number on them. Yep, they're on the recall list.

Some of their stuff is decent quality, but if it's not made in China, it's made in India!

I'd rather not buy their stuff any longer, so I'm not sure what I'll do with the gift card from them.
