Gulf Shores/Orange Beach Officials Refute CNN "hit piece" On Alabama Beaches

CNN on Monday evening ran a lengthy segment about Alabama’s beaches supposedly being packed to the brim over the Memorial Day Weekend, however local officials are now pushing back on the accuracy of the reporting.
You can watch the original CNN segment below:
Speaking to WPMI, Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft and Orange Beach City Manager Ken Grimes questioned CNN’s reporting.
“You would be able to go down there at any time on our beaches and tell a story you wanted to tell if you had an agenda,” Craft told the local NBC affiliate.
He added, “We can’t control everybody, but we’ve done the best that we can, and I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen down here.”
The mayor then emphasized the importance of perception, speaking to how camera angles can distort reality.
“I will agree that if you stood and looked down the beach horizontally like their video did, it looks like chaos. But when you get out and walk through the people and you go vertically across the beach, you will see that the majority of the people are social distanced or staying together,” Craft outlined.
David Swiger, a local real estate broker who sells Alabama’s beautiful beaches for a living, also spoke critically about the CNN segment.
“I don’t think the story is very accurate,” he told WPMI. “I think the angles of the photography and videography are very curious. There’s no aerial shots taken that show the social distancing. It looks like, to me, the people are very respectful. They were giving everyone their six feet.”

Congressman Bradley Byrne (AL-01) on Wednesday also took aim at CNN, criticizing the segment’s on-scene reporter for apparently not wearing a mask on the beach when the camera stopped rolling.

  1. CNN will operate as long as there is a willingness to continue paying for them to be on your cable, satellite, or at local facilities that have it on their television. If enough cancelled their cable, unless it's removed, or refused to do business with anyone that has it on their television, CNN would disappear, or drastically change.

Will this happen? Nope. Most people are cattle, chewing their cud, and never wondering why they're being herded.

  2. The whole idea of making a big deal about social distancing at a beach is ridiculous. Have you ever gone to a beach and put your towel down within a few feet of someone you didn't know? Not me. If someone got that close to me, I'd GTFO of there - with no "pandemic."

I never lived in the Northeast, but even Miami was never that crowded.

Absolutely! I've been a photographer since the early '70s. I saw several of those reports and immediately saw it was forced perspective from the way they shot the scenes. Just BS from start to finish.

  3. I was there this past weekend. It was a below average Memorial Day crowd. I own a condo on Perdido Key beach front since 2001. Everybody was social distancing, at stores (we went to Target only 50 people in the place), restaurants, condo lobbies, beaches, even the elevators was one family or person at a time.

Communist News Network is fake news. How many lies do they have to be caught in?

  4. On youtube look at Ginne Springs 2020 - no way people are social distancing there. There's one shot where it's just inner-tube to inner-tube across the whole spring. Not saying CNN didn't have an agenda in Alabama, just saying people truly aren't social distancing. Now, I will 100% say there were no old people there (Ginne Springs), maybe some people in the videos from there are in their 40's but most look to be in their 20's... and I'm quite sure anyone with a pre-existing condition wouldn't have been there. I also don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, if we got to 70% infected we'd have herd immunity and this thing would mostly die off. Also, let me just add, many people think this thing is a joke, my 21 year old very healthy daughter has it right now, along with a few of her 20-something year old co-workers (she's an auto mechanic at a dealership, and in the last 2 weeks about 1/4th of them have gotten it)... this virus is no joke, it's a serious motherfucker. There are way too many people saying it's not a big deal, it is. I know a couple people that have passed away (most likely) because of it... not saying they didn't have other problems, they may have, they were in their upper 50's and low 60's and not obese but a bit overweight, and I don't know if they had any other medical issues, but they got covid, they died. Had they not gotten it I believe they'd still be around. That being said if the right solution to this is the herd immunity route then my daughter and her coworkers are who we need to get it to get immunity... not an old fart like me.
