I've never owned an Army Colt, but I'd love to have one of the 7 1/2" models like Marshall Matt Dillion carried on the long running TV show, Gunsmoke..

Gunsmoke was and is one of my all time favorite television shows. So, when I came across this article the other day titled Gunsmoke's Gun for Hire, I thought I'd share it here.

For those interested, the story can be read by clicking HERE.

  1. I've got a Ruger New Vaquero with a 5 1/2 inch barrel that is a real pleasure to shoot. I recommend it if you're thinking about investing in a single six.

    1. Thanks. I've had several single action model pistols. I've owned Colt's New Frontier Scout and an older Ruger Single Six. I currently have a Ruger stainless Single Six (.22 short, long, LR and .22 mag cylinder). It is a great gun, but too heavy to carry around for six rimfire shots. I also have Ruger "three screw" Super Blackhawk .44 magnum. It was manufactured in 1967. It is a pleasure to shoot. Still, I'd like to have a Colt or quality knockoff like the one in the article.

    2. Many reasons to like the 45 LC. The biggest would be performance for it was the most powerful handgun until the 50's when the 44 Mag came along. With proper hand loads and Ruger pistol it can easily surpass the 44 Mag. It has been stated that the army picked this caliber because it could go the length of horse and still hit the vitals by a hapless trooper being drugged across the plains with leg tied up in the stirrup. And this was with a Back powder load.

  2. The Cody Firearms Museum has one display that is just TV and movie guns. Of course, you have to be of a certain age for it to mean anything.

  3. Only time I liked Gunsmog was when Burt Reynolds was in it. His character was the only one who didn't worship Mr Dillon.

As for the six-shooter, that's the old Single Action Army, carried by many on TV - Paladin, the Cartwrights (after they turned in their cap and ball pistols), The Colt cousins (Colt .45?), Nick Barkley, etc.

    1. I grew up with Gunsmoke and still like it. My wife and I watch it on INSP almost every night. Like "The Andy Griffith Show".In my honest opinion, the best ones are the black and white episodes! LOL

  4. I went through a phase for a while where I was acquiring semis. That lasted for a few years and then I went back to my beloved single actions. Must have been ingrained in me from watching Westerns in my formative years. My wife and I still watch reruns of "Rawhide", "Have Gun, Will Travel", "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and a bunch of others. The first single action that I ever bought was a Ruger Single Six convertible in 1976. The cool thing is that the barrel is stamped "Made in the 200th year of American liberty". Then over the years I've gotten a number of Blackhawks. I would love to have an original, old Colt, but I've been spending my Social Security checks on a new hobby lately. Collecting late 1800s to early 1900s shotguns. Nothing expensive, just mostly old oddballs....

  5. I remember Larry's Gun Shop in Hisperia Ca used to have a single action on display and claimed that it was one of the ones used in Gunsmoke. Never looked into the claim as i have been out of the high desert for 30 years now.
