  2. J. Wellington Wimpy, predates most of us I would guess. We only know him from re-runs.
wikipedia: His best-known catchphrase started in 1931 as "Cook me up a hamburger. I'll pay you Thursday." In 1932, this then became the famous "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".

You are sure right about that. Does anyone younger than 25 even remember the FLASHY lead character, Popeye?
I was in a store checking out, maybe 10-12 years ago when the ~25yo male cashier said something which evoked a sad attempt at humor from me, quoting a short WC Fields axiom. The reply? "Who was that?"
I know I am old and Fieds died almost a year before was born but I always saw his humor as timeless-- human frailty based rather than transient political or social issue based. Pretty much as relevant/funny today as in the old days. Celebrities, presidents, international heroes&villains all come and go, soon to be lost from memory, but that was my wakeup call to the fact that I WAS closing in on my use by date, no matter how much I denied it.
