I Bet It's A Good One...

  1. Worked at a place with a funky loading dock and always made sure the driver had the brakes locked.

  2. Had this old boy that wasn't too sharp rise in seniority to the top, so he got to haul a lot of full loads early. My job was to keep him OFF the dock, as he got in the way. One day he came back for another load.. and didn't check to see if it was done and ready to pull away from the dock, you know, maybe walk back there and see if I was finished loading the last few pallets.. Of course, one could see from the apron and feel the forklift going in and out, even sitting in the cab. The dumb sumbitch pulled away just as I was loading the last couple.. Holy sh..t, slow motion ride to hell, kaboom, landed upright. I gave him a cussin' like you wouldn't believe. The place next door had a ramp to drive the forklift back up to dock level, so no real harm, pulled an empty trailer over there, didn't miss a lick.

  3. It happens. Then trailer locks may or may not get installed.

  4. A new driver for a common carrier had backed in to pick up a load. The sales rep for the carrier was there watching along with myself as my son was loading pallets into the trailer when the tractor/trailer started rolling down the slight incline. Driver forgot to set the brake, son forgot to chock the wheels. I hollared at son to set his brake and hang on while the driver gave foot chase. We never saw that driver again. I think they both learned a valuable lesson on the cheap.

  5. A friend of mine says his mother would tell the kids "don't be the reason someone makes a rule or a sign" before they would all run off to play. Sage advice.

  7. Bourbon may have played a role. By the way The DaleyGator was shit-canned by WordPress so, it is now located here at https://daleygatordaleybabes.wordpress.com until I get a new permanent host

  8. What was it my old 1st Sgt. Used to say, "If you're going to do something stupid which will entail being the subject of a major safety briefing, make sure you at least do something legendary and proudly own that shit!"

  9. I worked at a foundry on one side of a road, for over 35 years, with a foam/packaging factory on the exact opposite side of the road. They sent out trailer loads of Styrofoam, so the loads were packed tightly, but were not heavy at all. Once, they had the accident from hell, where the driver pulled out while the forklift was still part way on board. To make it short, the truck got away from the dock, and the lift truck fell nose first into the truck well, and the lift truck driver was killed.
My shop when I hired in in 1978 had about 40 workers on the floor and when I left in 2013 had around 120 men. This plastics factory I am not sure of, but it could not have ever had more than 20 men there ever. It's business had it's ebbs and flows, but it was never a big place. But tragedies like that always are tough, no matter how big.

  10. I worked at a place where a couple of the dock workers decided it would be a good joke to lock a forklift, its driver, and one of the loaders in the trailer when it needed to be moved to another dock. The jokers slammed the doors and latched them, and gave the driver the all clear. He moved the trailer, and heard the yells from inside when he left the truck. He quickly opened the doors and let the two guys inside back out. The jokers saw the look on all three of their faces and high tailed it away from the dock. When the boss found out, we had two new loaders the next day and the two jokers were never seen again. The two that were locked in the truck, along with the driver, got the rest of the week off with pay.
