In high school I worked summers on a farm. In a really good year we'd have 4 alfalfa cuttings and I'd be on the little orange Allis Chalmers tractor with the side cutter, cutting down the sweet smelling hay. As I'd get towards the center of the rectangular field with about 4 rounds still to make, the hawks would start circling overhead. With each round there'd be baby rabbits frantically running, trying to get to the protection of the hedge rows surrounding the field. More than a few never made it, as the hawks would swoop down and enjoy a warm, tasty meal. Perfect illustration of how the food chain works.
Do believe that is a barred owl. Found one slightly injured by the road on my way to work one dark morning years ago. Was told at the vet that they were invading the area at the time and pushing out the spotted owl. Now the eco-bosses want to literally massacre the barred owls by the thousands to save the spotted owl. Real animal lovers those...twits.
It could be. This is in southern New Hampshire. As someone noted , it does look like an oil painting when you zone in. Kinda weird the way my phone captured it.
