Ireland doesn't really matter too much when the balance of trade is considered. Tariffs can be argued to be better than income taxes because they raise government revenue by taxing imported goods rather than workers' earnings, allowing people to keep more of the income they earn. Supporters also argue that tariffs encourage consumers to buy domestically produced products, which can strengthen local industries, preserve jobs, and reduce reliance on foreign imports. While tariffs may increase the prices of some imported goods, advocates contend that the trade-off is worthwhile if it supports domestic production and economic self-sufficiency.
If you don’t want to pay the “tax” that tariffs represent, consumers have a choice: buy locally produced goods instead. Trade relationships should be judged not only by cheap imports, but by whether they strengthen the domestic economy. The U.S. runs a relatively balanced goods trade relationship with Saudi Arabia, with a small surplus of roughly $1–3 billion, while it runs a goods deficit with Ireland of around $114 billion. If the goal is to encourage production, jobs, and economic resilience at home, it is worth asking: which trading partner relationship better serves American workers and industries?

ReplyDeleteBesides, tariffs are a tax on the people once you understand them. Example, who gets the paid tariff money.
