I am sure I wasn't the only thirteen year old in jr. high who began to question how a few hundred Spaniards (sometimes the story might be British, Portuguese, French, etc.) could cross an ocean in a tiny wooden boat and conquer and kill "millions". Often times it was as the author explains in this video and not simply because they were "bloodthirsty" Europeans lusting for Gold.
Check out the YT/podcast "The Rest is History". They did a four or five part series on the downfall of the Incas. Very even handed and funny as well.
ReplyDeleteThe diseases they brought killed most
ReplyDeleteAh, the old virgin soil argument.
DeleteIt logically would also stand to reason the natives would've had immunity to germs the Spaniards had not been exposed to as well.
So why was there no mass deaths of the Spaniards either in the new world or, because they became carriers, back in Europe?

Education system history I see.

Spot on! Although I think some of the numbers are low. During the dedication of the sun pyramid the Aztec sacrificed 30,000 captives / prisoners / enemies .

O.K. Maybe so. Yes, all lands were conquered by someone at some time, and the mesoamericans WERE a bloodthirsty bunch. And the Incas weren't exactly sweethearts, either.
ReplyDeleteBut I will NEVER . . . NUNCA . . . forgive the Spanish parrocos and sacerdotes for destroying all those codices of the Maya and Inca.
And please let's not forget what the Church did to hundreds of thousands of people in 15th century Europe for worshiping the wrong god or the right god the wrong way. Thousands were killed, brutally, savagely for wrongthink.

Don't give Islam a pass for what they've done continuously since, both to each other and to every other religion they come in contact with.
ReplyDeleteChristianity had a Reformation. Islam CANNOT by the words of the Koran.
I was taught the Conquistadors brought Covid with them and the natives refused the vaccine.
ReplyDeleteThe woke media covers that up these days!
DeleteHaha, man that was awesome!
Deleteback when my oldest was in high school, I had to go to some parent -teacher meeting thing. yeah. I was a single parent. anyway, looking thru his "social studies " book. I found 2.5 pages on WW2 and 65 pages on the civil rights time/bullshit/whatever. I asked his teacher about this, like why does a time when over 50 to 70 million people died
ReplyDeleteget 2.5 pages ? and why is the civil rights time so important ? he had no words. and get this shit. 1 whole page was on us dropping the "bomb" and how EVIL we where to do that (??????) here the part that pissed me off to no end.
I had spent time at CGSC in the early 1980's and got to know a lot of officers from around the world. yeah. even a few
from Japan. they where GLAD we dropped the bomb. otherwise we would have had to destroy the whole place.
he told me about learning to stab GIs with wooden spears while hiding in holes in school. in school. that's what they where teaching the KIDS to do to fight the allies if they invaded. I heard stories from my uncle who was in the last big battle over there. he talked about mothers with kids jumping of the cliff and there wasn't a damn thing they could do to stop them. he was crying as he told me about it. it was that bad to watch.
and my grandson wonder why I spent so much time teaching him what really happened in WW2. dave in pa.
I have seen the footage you are referring to and heard a veteran tell of this in the town barbershop as a kid. He said some of the American servicemen were begging and pleading with the mothers not to jump. As a note, I recall most veterans I ever spoke with about the war who had served in the Pacific Theater having nothing but praise for Harry S. Truman and his decision to drop the bomb(s).
Deleteand here is another fun fact. they have not made a purple heart medal since 1945. yup. they figured if they had to invade Japan, it was going to cost them a lot. like 50 thousand or more dead, and at least 3/4 million guys wounded. and they where pretty sure they would have to wipe out / destroy the whole country . faced with that fact, dropping the bomb was the easy way out for everyone. dave in pa.
DeleteI hope you also told your grandson that in WWII we were fighting against fascists and people that thought that only certain kids/color people deserved to live. That part of the message seems to be getting lost a lot lately
DeleteRead a book called Hell To Pay to find out why the bomb was tghe only choice.
DeletePS Consider the fact that, after 2 bombs were dropped on Japan, they still took 5 days to surrender.
"Consider the fact that, after 2 bombs were dropped on Japan, they still took 5 days to surrender."
DeleteExactly. We now know the losses of Japanese and Americans/maybe a few "allies" would have been catastrophic.
The Columbian Exchange - Smallpox and influenza from the Europeans and the Amerindians gave the world tobacco. I think we know which caused the most harm and still does.
ReplyDeleteThe Indians also gave us syphilis.
DeleteI was a Cortez buff (Boomer) as a kid and this guy nails it.More to the point, every Indian war fought had lots of Indian allies, there were Mohegan and Stockbridge companies in Rogers' Rangers, the Crow Pawnee, Shoshone, and other tribes helped fight the Sioux.
DeleteAbsolutely Incredible, thank you posting
