Ahh, yes. Matchbox cars! Almost every drug store and store that sold toys had a display case for those things. Hot Wheels came along and pretty much left matchbox cars in the dust. Though the Matchbox "Superfast" cars were pretty good, they were Johnny-come-latelys, and Lesney Products lost the race.
One of my friends and I had all kinds of Matchbox models of construction machinery. We'd dig little excavations while we pretended we were digging for gold. Precious memories....
I had five 72 count folding cases, three 24 count cases and large cases for my entire collection of Matchbox small cars and the large cars and four Matchbox road rugs and a collection of structures all made by Matchbox. I bought them working on a cousin's farm cleaning barns and feeding. When I enlisted in the Army, I sold all of them for a nice profit as they were in good condition(never played outside). I wished I kept them now...

The local Safeway usually has a large floor display of small cars-Chinese shit, I suppose-and given the attention the display gets I'm guessing they sell a lot and probably have a pretty good profit margin. Or else they'd not use the floor space for the display.
