Somebody Was Sick During Christmas

My son was fishing and found this deer floating in the lake near my home last Friday. It had been gut shot and died in the water. The weather has been unseasonably warm (70s the last several days before and after Christmas), and he deduced it had been dead 4-5 days when he found it. He towed it to the ramp where he sawed the skull cap/horns off and posted the story to social media that anyone describing the deer and area where it was shot could have it.

  4. That's why you should use a hollow point in a manly caliber. And don't take shots that you aren't certain of hitting.

    1. Hollow points are illegal in my state for hunting. Soft nose lead is the way to go. And we agree that taking uncertain shots is irresponsible.

  5. Well it's also entirely possible they tried to track this thing, and being it died in the water, it was the water they lost the trail.

  6. Garsh, Elmer, the blood trail seems to just end at the lake's shore.

  7. I have tracked a lot of deer and when they hit water often times they float or are swept away from from the spot where they entered the water. Gut shot deer are sometimes easy for a dog to find (smell) but very hard for people to find as there’s very little blood to be seen.

  8. Shit happens Junior, move on. Buck fever is real, especially with a really nice piebald buck. I love it when the internet judges break out their robes. Being perfect have any drawbacks?

  9. "That's why they call it hunting". Certainly the shooter did not intend to wound the deer and let it get away. I have hunted around this lake all of my life. and have seen deer that were shot head straight for the water. The lake is large and multi-fingered with hilly terrain surrounding it. What might be a straight line quick swim across a large slough can easily equate to a 45 minute drive to the other side (limited bridges). When dog hunting was legal in our county, it was common for deer to "swim the lake" to escape the hounds. If the dogs didn't swim across, the hunters sometimes would catch the dogs, load them up and drive around (national forest lands/public) to put them back on the "trail" continuing the hunt. As anyone who has hunted knows, if you hunt long enough.............

  11. He did report it to the game warden before he ever touched it. He told the warden if anyone wanted to claim the skull/horns, to call.
