They are Crawling
A friend and fellow turkey hunter I know killed these two monsters Tuesday the 19th. He said they were fighting inside his barn. He heard a ruckus, went to check it out, and found them going at it pretty good. He lives about 5 miles from me. Another buddy who logs for a living, killed a big one last week too about ten miles from where I live. I have yet to see a venomous snake this year and it is not because I am not out of doors. I am this way about snakes. If I can see one, they don't worry me too much, but when I amble up on one, there is a heart-a-stroke in the making!
Barn Snakes
PS: As I was trying to think of a title for the post, this song came to mind. Of course, they crawl in the daytime too.
Venomous snakes, they inject venom. they don't kill you if you eat them, so they're not poisonous.
ReplyDeleteWrap the rattler in pastrami and steam it. Yumm.
DeleteHad about a 5' copperhead in front of the garage door the other day, I didn't bother it.
ReplyDeleteJust watched it for awhile.
Noticed something.
On a gravel driveway snakes don't do the ziggy zaggy thing, guess the gravel is too harsh.
It some how moved forward, slowly, without zigging.
They all have a purpose and as long as they don't bother me I'll do likewise.
Nope, it's poisonous, it's being rehoused to the eternal.
DeleteI call BS on the five foot copperhead:

Dood, I said "about". I didn't go running for a tape measure. lol
DeleteThere was a 3' wide plastic sawhorse close by and it looked considerably bigger than that.
So believe whatever you want, don't care.
And to 8:08, we're in the deep woods here and there are probably lots of dangerous animals about, can't rehouse everybody. Just have to stay vigilant.
He was probably making a guess-timate. I doubt a measuring tape was involved. They always look bigger if you are scared of snakes. I couldn't even tell you how many live snakes I have caught with my hands. I know 7 just in 1 basement
DeleteI'm with you Ghost, I don't kill them if I can avoid it. I've been catching snakes and other reptiles since 1961 (foothills of East County, San Diego). Caught my first rattler in 1964, brought it home, put it in an aquarium in the basement...until Mom found it, then it got "rehomed" back out to the weeds.
DeleteNow, since 2015, we live in western middle Tennessee. I've caught at least 20 black snakes ("chicken" snakes, 1 was 6'! the smallest , 3') in and around the chicken coop. I catch them gently, they won't bite you if you're gentle, then haul them to the train station, not really, I take them 2 miles away to the other side of the river.
I've only had to relocate 2 Timber rattlers (one large, one medium) and one Copperhead (medium small). They were remarkably mild mannered. Back when I wore boots all the time, I'd catch rattlers by presenting the sole of my boot for striking. They figured out quickly, that's no bueno, so they opt for escape or defensively coiling up. Then you can pin their head and grab them behind the head. Now that I wear crocs, I use a stick or tool to pin them. The wife STILL doesn't like me saving rattlers, but I'm not a critter murderer, like I was back in my unwise youth. So far, I haven't been punished by any lower gods for not being a killer. Though, I did have to shoot 1 coyote, he showed up in the middle of the day and immediately started sneaking on the chicken coop. My 300 B.O. AR pistol, turned him off like a light switch, no suffering. I think that one was "justifiable homicide".
I LOVE Tennessee!
You don’t want to eat them if they bite themselves while you are dispatching them from this life. Always cut the head off quickly and bury it so you don’t lose a dog.
ReplyDeleteCharlie Pride! Great CW artist. Highest paid artist for a very long time. Excellent song choice. Kent
ReplyDeleteOne reason I keep a lot of 12 Ga. birdshot on hand.
ReplyDeleteVery good friend of mine up in Colbert County killed a pretty big one that was a couple feet off his patio around this time last year. He says he sees them all the time further out on his property but they usually stay away from the house. Says he wouldn't eat one as they are full of all kinds of nasty critters. I wouldn't know but the one he killed sure would have made a nice hat band AND belt. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity, are they good eating?
ReplyDeleteYes, rattlesnakes are good eating. Most people can’t get past the stigma, though.
DeleteTastes like chikin
DeleteI usually carry a NAA 5-shot revolver in my front pocket in a leather holster when I am outside in the warmer months. The first two rounds of .22 WMA are shotshells. I learned that trick from one of my neighbors who killed over a 100 snakes (I forget the actual number, but he kept count) with the same rig before he lost his little gun in the lake.
ReplyDeleteInteresting... during the Biden administration I lost all of my guns in the lake too. ; )
DeleteA barn snake cannot harm you unless you are a rat.
ReplyDeleteThese aren’t “barn snakes”. They’re Canebrake Rattlesnakes that happened to be in someone’s barn.
DeleteHey, not asking for your address but WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
ReplyDeleteMy problem is I don't see snakes until I'm standing on them; always had something of a blind spot.
ReplyDeleteWhen I head into the wilds I carry a Smith & Wesson Governor. First two rounds are .410 shells, the other four are .45 Colt. Good for snakes or leftists, but I repeat myself.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mr. Twain...

Deleterat snake, good for mice control
ReplyDeleteDid you notice the rattles on the dnd of the tails?
DeleteHow did you get rat snakes from Canebrake Rattlesnakes?

Non of those pictured are "rat" snakes and the photo caption "barn snakes" distinguishes between snakes killed in the barn the snake killed by the logger. I swear............
ReplyDeleteAre those rattlers? They look like that on the pickup tail gate pic. I'll SWAG 5 to 6 feet long?
ReplyDeleteI am not scared of snakes but I do carry a couple of rounds of snake shot in my pistol. Opened my shed door and one was coiled on the trash can about crotch high. Wasn't willing to get struck there. It blew it right in half. 38 spc
ReplyDeleteSoooo....just for curiosity, what particular variety of venomous snakes are these?
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing rattlers, but there are at least a dozen different varieties, depending on where you live.
Toxic Deplorable B Woodman
Timber or Canebrake, the latter being the southern variety of the former.
DeleteTY. Not that I expect to be out that way anytime soon, but always good to know yer local varmints.

DeleteTimber or Canebrake, the latter being the southern variety of the former."
Crotalus knows his snakes. Alabama has three types of rattlers; Timber, Eastern Diamondback, and Pigmy. The Eastern Diamondbacks are found mostly in the southern portion of the state, but I have a couple here in NA (350 miles north of the Gulf of America) in my lifetime.
I left out the word "seen" in the last post. The last sentence should have read, "I have seen a couple here in north Alabama." I didn't want Anon thinking I was collecting snakes and two Diamondbacks in my garage. He might write me a ticket for that too.
DeleteThanks for the plug, Jeffrey!
DeleteSnakes have been a passion since I was 12years old. My latest pets are a couple of desert sand swimmers that resemble coral snakes.
I grew up with a boy that would catch snakes and keep them. He had a two foot Copperhead once in an aquarium in his room. One day I was visiting him and asked where the snake was. He gave me a big "shush" and said he had not told his mother and did not. He caught the Copperhead laying on a clothes pile a week later. I've seen him bitten several times by snakes that were not venomous. About six years ago he was bitten by a rattler on the hand. He didn't take the anti-venom after they told him his insurance wouldn't pay and gave him the price (he could easily have afforded it). He made it, but suffered with his hand/arm for weeks.
DeleteCorral snakes are not normally found here. I saw one as a boy about fifty years ago. A family friend found it in his garden. They are found with more frequency along the coast/southern portion of the state. I am glad you enjoy your "hobby", but it isn't for me! LOL
Understood! 😄
DeleteBy the way, I don’t keep the “hots”.
If you get bitten by an Australian brown snake, have symptoms, and refuse antivenin you can kiss your ass goodbye.
DeleteHere in southern AZ it's snake mating season. So they're a lot more active.
ReplyDeleteSnake mating? Is that what the Dems call their primaries now?
DeleteMy uncle always said "there are big snakes , there are little snakes. There are sticks that look like snakes and I don't like them neither"...
ReplyDeleteDayum, them some biggins, how many buttons?
ReplyDeletePew pew.
ReplyDeletebowhunters sometimes pay good money for snakeskins..some traditional bowhunters use them to camouflage the limbs of the bows. they look pretty slick like that.
ReplyDeleteHi Irish!!,
ReplyDeleteToo Bad the snake(s) weren't around my AO... Too many Kids, pets, "Scared Women" and the like around my digs... 'Would have "86'ed" bofm' as .... I would like a really nice snake skin "Hat Band" for my river Boat Gambler Straw Panama Hat that my lil' Sis' bought for me down in the "French Quarter" in New Orleans for my B' Day a few years ago!!
And... Yes, I have killed, skinned and made hat bands out of quite a few snakes over the years!!!!
BTW Some people say the meat "Tastes like Chicken??"... Naw!, it tastes like "SNAKE!!" .. and I think it is tasty!!
Blue Skyz!!!!,
skybill
Where I live Down Under, we have serious snakes, like browns, tigers and taipans, and compared to rattlers the rattlers akin to garter snakes. One does not try to catch or handle those, as any mistake can be fatal. Oz snakes are seriously deadly.
