Thanks to all for replying. We probably will not eat any of that deer turkey day, but will in the coming year. It weighed app. 170 lbs. and my son was having it ground. To answer your question Tom in NC, we drug the deer to a point about half way up a small bluff (for those who are not familiar with northwest Alabama, it is rough country). My son thought he could drive his jeep into the edge of the woods atop the minor bluff where his cable would reach the deer. He did. Then, he ran the cable out and we secured the cable to the deer. When he began to winch it up, I told him to start his engine before he depleted his battery. The winch had already drained the battery. I had my Chevy Colorado parked at the top of the hill (this happened where an 80 acre plot of private land meets a huge tract of National Forest Land which is where he actually shot the deer). We used his jumper cables to restart the Jeep. We almost had the deer to the front bumper when the Jeep died, running out of gasoline. Where he shot the deer was about a mile from my house, so I went home and got a two gallon can of gas to put in the Jeep. This we did, but not before we had to take the battery off and carry it back down to jumpstart his Jeep. It started, but would not pick up the gas. Over the course of the next two hours we probably took the battery off and carried it down to his Jeep no less than six times. We made two trips to a convenience store about five miles (one way) away ferrying my five gallon jerry can to fill his tank. The Jeep was pointed downhill at such an angle that the pump would not pick up the gas. We put app. eleven gallons of gasoline in the Jeep before it would start. So, what started out to be thirty minute job ended up taking about 2.5 hours. Still, a fun time was had by all!
My oldest brother here in Michigan shot almost the exact same buck. He shot an 8 point as well, I am not sure what it weighed out at. I saw a picture of it, and it was also a nice buck. 23511035_2214828381876838_3518618175203241024_o
I'll pass that on to my son 9Booger. Thanks to all for the congrats too. Those silly bucks are coming into rut here and chasing does. I may get out this afternoon and try my luck. I hope all have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
Boom! Looks like you may have a traditional Thanksgiving (venison was on the menu)
ReplyDeleteLooks like an 8-pointer. Congrats to the son and dad. Venison for Turkey Day?
ReplyDeleteNice, Jeff. Tell him congratulations.

Thank God you said "holler," not a damn hollow. Nice deer. From a WV redneck who grew up in a holler.
ReplyDeleteHow'd he get the jeep stuck in the holler, and why wouldn't the winch get it out?
ReplyDeleteOh, wait - you meant drag the deer out! ;-)
Congratulations to all involved!!!
ReplyDeleteI always found it easier to shoot them near the road.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, nice looking 8-point.
Amen and amen!
