Incoming Solar Storm.....

A wave of plasma stoked by an X-class solar flare, the most intense type, is headed towards Earth. This blast of charged particles, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), is forecast to ignite a geomagnetic storm on Earth over the weekend. NOAA predicts it will be minor, maybe moderate. NASA says it will be moderate to severe.
I ask: which intensity will it be and why aren’t these two science agencies on the same page?
The intensity of the inbound CME matters.
If NOAA’s right, and the ensuing geomagnetic storm is minor, it’s no big deal. It means the high latitudes could be treated to some brilliant auroras over the weekend with few, if any, negative effects on earth-orbiting satellites or the power grid.

Why The News Sucks.....

We had a shooting here in MA last night by a State Trooper:

WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- A 43-year-old Worcester man, Victor Devilla, was shot and killed in Worcester by a state trooper Wednesday night.
The shooting happened some time after midnight at Chandler and Irving streets. Police say the man was driving a stolen car and heading right for the trooper when the trooper opened fire, firing a single shot and hitting the suspect in the stomach.
“The trooper was standing in front of the suspect vehicle,” State Police spokesperson David Procopio said. “And the evidence indicates that the vehicle definitely was in drive and possibly driving toward him, putting him in fear for his safety.”

Now go look at the picture the paper puts up of the suspect.... HERE

The Reading List ...Earth Abides.

From WIKI:

Earth Abides is a 1949 post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by American writer George R. Stewart. It tells the story of the fall of civilization from deadly disease and its rebirth.

One of my readers had recommended this book awhile back. Overall I would give
it 4+ stars out of 5.
It keep me interested and looking forward to reading it when I got home after work. I would definitely recommended it if you enjoy these type of end of world books.  It is more along the lines of the recent book One Second After, which is definitely worth reading.

Earth Abides doesn't have the supernatural aspect or good vs. evil as far as a Stephen King type novel The Stand.

I found it to be fairly entertaining and well worth the time spent reading.

Ancient coins worth $15 million found by amateur treasure hunters after 30 year search

Good for them!!

Thirty years ago, a farmer found a few Iron Age coins on his property on the island of Jersey, off the coast of Normandy. For the next three decades, a pair of amateur treasure hunters combed the soil with metal detectors in search of more treasure. They found it!

Two amateur treasure hunters have unearthed a mass of celtic coins that are over 2,000 years and old and estimated to be worth a total of $15 million.

Reg Mead and Richard Miles found the stash using a high powered metal detector called a deepseeker. What they discovered was a large block of clay containing 30,000 to 50,000 gold and silver coins dating from the 1st Century BC.

The coins—which could have been buried to prevent Roman troops from getting them during Julius Caesar's invasion of the British Islands—come from Armorica, modern day Brittany and Normandy. They have been buried for more than 2,000 years.

Each Roman or Celtic coin is said to be worth between 100 to 200 British Pounds ($156 to $311), according to Dr. Philip de Jersey, a former Celtic coin expert at Oxford University. He believes the haul is “extremely exciting and very significant.”

We All Know an Eric....

After a very busy day, a commuter settled down in her seat and closed her eyes as the train departed Montreal for Hudson .

As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled out his cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: "Hi sweetheart its Eric, I'm on the train", I know its the six thirty and not the four thirty but I had a long meeting, no, honey, not with that floozy from the accounts office, with the boss. No sweetheart, you're the only one in my life, yes, I'm sure, cross my heart etc., etc.

Fifteen minutes later, he was still talking loudly, when the young woman sitting next to him, who was obviously angered by his continuous rabble, yelled at the top of her voice: "Hey, Eric, turn that stupid phone off and get your sexy ass back into bed!"

Eric doesn't use his cell phone in public any longer.
