More smokestack demo with Alabama connections (UPDATED)

Anybody remember the Burt Reynold's movie Hooper? I bet the track hoe operator in the second clip had to change his drawers.

Here is the scene where the rocket car jumps the Warrior River. It was unmanned of course. One of my cousins witnessed the event when we were kids and he told me it tore that shell of a Trans Am all to hell.

Also, here a couple of links I found while searching for this. Click here and here for more.

  2. The Hooper movie had a secondary mission of breaking all of the existing car chase records. The most explosion's, most wrecked cars, longest car jump, highest car jump, and a few others. If I remember correctly, Buddy Joe Hooker was the lead stuntman on the film.

I am sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong.

    1. In 1978 I would have been nearly 14 when the movie debuted. I remember when the movie was being filmed and there was quite a bit of hype surrounding it. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't a wreck involving a tanker truck hauling gasoline on one of the Warrior River Bridges below Dora on old U.S. Hwy. 78 cause the collapse of the bridge? Burt was on top of his game at this time and some producer(s) with Alabama connections knew about the destruction of the old Northington Hospital grounds where University Mall stands today and fostered the idea of filming a scene there. They also learned about the destroyed bridge near the Walker/Jefferson Co. line and incorporated that "rocket car" jump into the film. I knew some folks that got to watch the unmanned car jump across the river and can remember wanting to go see it, but didn't make it.

  5. At least, when he replays that moment in his mind for the rest of his life, he won't cringe about Not nailing reverse and goosing it instead of turning the turret to make the collapsing chimney fall right across his cab. I'm glad he got away with it. I can't imagine what his daughter was feeling, watching that happen.

    1. FULL DISCLOSURE: Armchair quarterback here with ZERO experience. But I too wondered why he didn't reverse.

  8. In a situation like that I would rather set charges and step back a safe distance and then set them off by wire.
Of course a quick YouTube search will show instances of that going wrong too.
