So it looks like the one I was bitching about was compromised at the end of last season and I
got a cold shower for not prepping before the temps went below freezing. I'll back track
my trash talk on imported items a bit.

ReplyDeleteFWIW, the Salt Lake Temple is built out of solid granite, and the Saints would drill holes in the granite walls and pour water in the drill holes to freeze overnight. Slow, low tech, but it follows the First Rule of Engineering: If it's stupid but it works, it ain't stupid!
Our frost line "technically" is 60in. I bet we never had more than 2-3 inches this past season

ReplyDeleteNo, that shutoff was brand new. It was just residual from the iron in the well water. I use an RV filter for the horses water but bypass it when hosing down the tractor or lawn equipment.
DeleteYa get's what you pay for. I've had many of these inexpensive hardware store hose gizmos and they all fail rather quickly, more so if using well water for irrigation.

ReplyDeleteExcellent experiment, but I still stand by my earlier comment on quality of Chinese stuff. Had the casting been 1/16th (OK 1.58 MM) thicker, it would not have failed.
ReplyDeleteThey are still chinesium junk but I still use them over the other crap available. I have had them fall apart as well as break
ReplyDeleteI have seen larger ball valves do the same and crack when the port is perpendicular to the flow, the water trapped inside the ball expands sideways and cracks the housing. All valves in general are not recommended for outdoor applications, butterfly or Globe valves do not suffer when left off and pipes are drained.
