Back in the late 80's, I was going to Cortland University and had to travel I-90 to get there. Let me tell you what an awesome experience it was to see a B-52 in the landing pattern for Griffiss Air Force Base. It looked like they were hovering over the freeway and the roar of the engines could be heard over the radio. In the early 80's I went to Plattsburg AFB with the Boy Scouts. We took a bus around the base and got to see alert aircraft on 24 / 7 launch readiness. Kind of hairy if you think about it - being that close to nukes.
