Regarding Test Post Last Night

After searching off and on, I had seen imagebam noted in various places and reviews as

a possible substitute.  I did a dry run post and then checked how it worked.  I did NOT get

any pop ups or links to 'pron sites' using Firefox with ublock, ghostery, and adblock.

It was a bit cumbersome, I agree.

To the commenter that noted there appear to be some under age in the post. Please do elucidate

Irish on which one, one's, you are concerned about. If you mean under 30, then yes, it may be so.

Based on some other comments, it may be time to try my hand at Wordpress.  It seems they are

a bit more lenient on their TOS.

Has anyone got any input on wordpress one way or another?

This will take gettting used to after 14 plus years here.

Thanks for all the input, I'll be around as usual.

Irish

  1. I have used WP for 15 years and have almost zero problems with them.
    Highly recommend.

  3. To me it looked like a Porn site. Got out of it, and did a computer scan.

    1. Same & same, but your significant efforts _are_ appreciated.

  4. WordPress will change settings and/or disable a function then bring it back some time later. They didn't like my avatar and deleted it. It was a Minuteman with a M-16. I had a private Wordpress page that had my reloading data on it that got deleted.

  6. IIRC, a couple years back Kenny has some frustration with WP.

  7. Regardless which CMS you decide on I would recommend you move away from Google and sign up with a provider, this way you for the most part don't have to worry about anyone's TOS.

Yes, I know there is a cost involved but I would wager a fundraiser now and again would offset those costs. I suppose I should clear this with him first, but as an example when Phil had his back to the wall it didn't take long for the community at large to help him out. Speaking only for myself, and while I don't have a lot, I would have no problem tossing some your way to help out.

    Just a thought.

    1. I agree. I use godaddy for one website and ipage for another. I can play around with images as background (or not) and use whatever font in whatever color I want, even kanji comes across perfectly.
I do check my sites on various browsers every so often: chrome, brave, yandex, phoebe, and firefox; I've found very few probs.

  8. Let me know how it works out, I am thinking about dumping blogger as well.

  9. I hate WordPress. From the point of view of a visitor, it provides a highly inconsistent interface, depending upon which template the blog owner chooses. For example, I can comment at Joe Huffman's blog, and Joel's place (The Ultimate Answer to Kings) even with an active browser plugin that's disabling JavaScript. I can comment at Mad Medic only if I happen to logged in at wordpress.com at the same time. Over at Mad Medic, I can fill out the form, including username and e-mail, hit the button, and it just sits there, unless I'm logged in, in which case, it gives me popup to subscribe, which has no cancel option. Wordpress is just a mess. One blog - The Freeholder - won't display anything at all without using JavaScript.

From the point of view of a site owner, I have a small site I maintain which I host at wordpress.com, and that's the only reason I have a login there. The whole deal with choosing a theme and then crafting your site's look/feel is a PITA, IMHO. They foist new features on you, and then, as mentioned above, sometimes they bring them back. The "block editor" is a good example of that. Compared to the classic editor, it's a POS. Last I heard, Mad Medic was unable to get back to the classic editor.

Looking at the HTML source, I think these are the themes in question:
    TUAK - twentyten
    Joe Huffman - twentyeleven
Mad Medic - damned if I can tell
The Freeholder - "Dazzling Blog" I think

    The above:
    https://www.thefreeholder.net/
    https://maddmedic.wordpress.com/
    http://joelsgulch.com/ (TUAK)
    http://blog.joehuffman.org/

Oh, Phil is using the twentyeleven theme as well, and it's all good from my end, as a visitor.

Back in the early 2000's, I used Wordpress, and it was great. But they're hell-bent on "improving" it until it's broken. They can't just leave alone the things that a basic user would want for a blog.

Just my 2C, and unfortunately, I don't what else to recommend.

    1. I agree. Their support ticked me off, so I moved back to blogger about the time they were rolling out their "new and improved" editor. They still had the classic editor so I keep the old blog up to date, mostly when videos got deleted. But in the past month or so - maybe at the start of the year - the banished the classic editor and their all visual editor makes me mad.

  10. Phil and me had problems with WP during our troubling times with hackers and DOSs and since we have switched to a hosting company it hasn't been a problem using WP. Our sister site, the Vulgar Curmudgeon is on an older Blogger site and we can't change the templates and have trouble with the blog roles and deleting old, non-preforming blogs. Spam is a minimum, mostly Russian/Chinese/Arab bots as far as we can tell. Only thing we don't do is a lot of frontal, wide open crotch shots and that may be why we don't have problems.

  12. If you use WP.org instead of WP.com, one of the older themes may work for you. 2010 may be suitable; check out Weaver - so old (but still maintained) it allows you to set things up the way you want. The newer themes, maybe not so much. YMMV.

  14. Just changed over to wordpress at Christmas. Paid for my domain name with them hosting on a personal account. Using Bitacora as my theme because it's a little more flexible. Migration was almost seamless (some weirdness) and getting used to their system wasn't easy, but not hard either. I have my comments set up for login with name and email address and I don't think anyone's had a problem with it. Feel free to ping me backchannel if you want more info.

  16. GM Irish,

I am willing to bet a ham sandwich that your troubles started . the posted pics showed full frontal nudity. I had observed only topless pics during the FFF era. Then, maybe 6 to 12 months ago, pics of bush and beaver began to appear... often ! Just an observation and just saying !

    Good luck !

  17. anodtothegods.com uses WordPress and regularly posts items more adult than you've ever done with seeming no problem.

  18. That is one of the reasons why I stopped. I was getting citations and pics were taken down. It was a blog about chickens for God's sake....

  21. I've had no problems with Wordpress on mine. Here's the deal, if you are an actual customer, i.e. you pay for your site, you have more of a leg to stand on. Also, there's a difference between wordpress.com, which is hosted by wordpress, and using wordpress on an independent ISP. Divemedic was offering a hosting deal awhile back. It was more than I'd want to spend, but not unreasonable. 1-2 fundraisers would easily cover it. And, he's part of the family so to speak. Your site is a daily stop for a lot of us. Hell, I'd pony up a few shekels.

If I recall, the only sites I visited that wordpress.com cancelled crossed a huge line.

  22. I have been using wordpress for about five years now as the webmaster for my local gunclub. Their system a bit unpredictable at times and their customer service is sh!t. One example is as follows: I upload scores once a week from a trap league that runs 48 weeks/year. This upload consists of 24 small html files. The names of the files do not change over the course of a 24 week season. The contents are slightly different, but not much. some weeks, the files display on the site without additional intervention. Other weeks, every web entry has to be de-linked and manually relinked. When I asked Wordpress for support, they told me to go hire someone for $200/hour, otherwise, they wouldn't even give me a clue.

  23. Wordpress nukes people on the Right consistently. I went with a hosting company, and it seems to work okay-ish.

  24. I used WordPress to build my site and paid for hosting. Hated WordPress. I switched to a new hosting provider and just use their site builder. Works fine and just $1.66 per month when buying 48 months. I can afford that. Look for the good deals with good uptime.
