  13. boss gave me a challenge coin today, "american veteran" on one side, company logo on the other.

I had to tell him what challenge coins were used for..put it on the bar, everyone else puts theirs on the bar, whomever doesn't have one buys a round. if everyone has one, the first guy buys a round.

the HR lady looked mortified.."you mean by giving you this we're encouraging you to drink?? that means the company could be liable..oh god...what have we done?"

I'm thinking probably no coins next year....

  16. Challenge coins weren't a thing when I was in. Never heard of them until I'd been out for a decade or so...
USN '85-'94. They were for special units/ duties... now, like the "everyone gets a trophy generation"... challenge coins are no longer a status symbol, but a cheap ...Joke??? I'm glad I don't have any to try and make me play this game... I know what I did, no "coin" will validate that for me. And FU if you think you deserve a drink on me because I don't have a piece of crap "coin" ... I could get a dozen made up of any design you'd want. Don't mean nothing. Your trump coin... a 1oz gold eagle. that's my challenge coin. No, my challenge coin is my DD-214.

    1. I was in 90-94 and challenge coins were given if you were there for the commissioning or decommissioning of a squadron or a ship. they were also given out for specific missions, like we did a mission with the coasties doing drug interdiction and broke the record for how much was stopped..our ASW gear worked great for finding those towed drug subs.

my squadron won the LAMPS trophy 3 years running..hard work, competing with all the other H-2 squadrons in various tasks, turnaround time, at-sea rescues, ASW missions, datalink missions, cargo delivery, delivering a boarding party, medevac, ..all in the same day with the same aircraft, hot-fueling and changing out mission equipment while sitting on the flight deck of a frigate. we got a challenge coin for those too, and we earned it.

oh and lighten up, francis. no one is asking you to buy anyone a drink. it's a fun game. you don't wanna play, don't play.

So getting a piece of tin from someone who wasn't on deck busting their ass with you... makes it better??...
Sounds like you know you did a kick ass job... a"coin" won't make it better. Some of my best "accolades" were for stuff that was my regular job, and the "awards" I got were empty, didn't mean nothing. Coins, baubles, shiny, platitudes, style over substance... mean nothing. Smack me on the ass and tell me I did good... simple.
