We had been seeing it off and on but decided to ride to this vista last night about eight o'clock. It was dark but the photo looks as if it was taken at twilight. The comet was not visible to the naked eye for me, but as seen in the photo below, there was plenty of light for the comet to be captured by an IPhone camera. I could see it with binoculars too.

ReplyDeleteLook almost due west and 30/40ish degrees above the horizon. If you have an Iphone, you should be able to see/photograph the comet with the help of the phone. My understanding is that peak visibility has been wanning since 10/24.

ReplyDeleteWe've been tracking it for several nights in VA. Frequent cloudy/overcast skies have made it challenging. Binoculars have been necessary on all but one evening when it was clearly visible to the naked eye. Combining this with one evening when we were able to see the Northern Lights has made for an interesting October.

Have seen it here in Santa Rosa CA. Was able to get a picture of it using "night mode" on my Samsung phone. Pretty cool.

Get high and find a tall hill! : ^) I have the same problem in these hills. As you can see from the photo I posted, I was atop a high ridge facing the western sky. Elevation was my friend. Good luck.

DeleteI've been out looking for it every night this week. While the sky has appeared to be clear, there's actually a milky haze high up that prevents the comet from being seen with the naked eye where I am. That and a lot of light pollution. I've been using the free "Night Sky" app to locate it. Maybe I'll just try snapping a pic with my phone tonight. I'm using an iphone SE 2nd gen. The camera is not the best so I don't have much hope on getting a shot.
