I don't doubt anything in FischerKing's description, but I think he completely misses (or more likely, purposefully omits) the overarching connection to the obscene levels of military/industrial complex money, influence peddling and espionage that surround companies like Boeing/McDonnell-Douglas, Lockheed-Martin, BAE, Raytheon, Northrup-Grumman, etc.
Besides the considerable corporate backbiting between the players, using their own clandestine black ops teams, there's a common connection to a massive network of taxpayer funded intelligence types. Some that work together, some in direct competition, some that only know of one another and some that operate either independently, for hire or for foreign governments.
These are the guys that will show up if you pop up on their radar as an independent company that happens to be working on tech that they either want for themselves, don't want anyone to know about at all or are already working on and would really, really, rather not have any competition. Or if you become proficient in the development or manufacture of some sort of gear that they want.
They also come by, obviously, if you present any sort of significant threat to their revenue stream. If they'll take out a President (and get away with it), they definitely won't hesitate to make an employee, ex-employee or other troublemaker disappear.
Now that seems to be just a bit far-fetched, Nonymouse. I mean, really, I have something under development that will revolutionize the industry and make lots of the current stuff obsolete. In fact, ... Oh, be right back, there's someone at the door.
This the same story of many once great USA engineering/manufacturing companies that jumped on the outsourcing bandwagon in the last 30-40 years. Between "women breaking the glass ceiling" that was all the rage in the late 90's early 00's and now DEI, in another generation, maybe less, the USA will become an after thought in manufacturing history. Just remember that the only human endeavors that create wealth are mining and manufacturing. Everything else is service.
80's & 90's involved 'downsizing' - cutting the fat. MBA's who did that handed what was left over to the up and coming MBA's who now couldn't manage an organization after the loss of experience and floor level smart people were gone. Today it's in short supply
