yup. damn sure did. was asked to fill in for some asshole at a out patient MRI center on a Sat. asked for a key to get in. I have seen the "staff" that worked there. anyway, the girl who was to open it up was 2 hours late (?) I wasn't there. after waiting a hour, I said fuck it and went home. first thing I did when I got home was to crack open a beer. I was pissed. 45 minutes drive to the damn place, a hour wait and then 45 drive back home. fuck'em. and you know "they" called 30 minutes after I was home to ask me to come back. no fucking way. the asshole who I was to fill in for had to go into work after all. he held that against me for years after that. but after that I stop picking up the phone when it rang on my day off. dave in pa.
Stop picking up the phone on your day off? That's actually generous. At work I answer no phones after noon on Fridays and if I don't recognize the number as someone I really need to support, I don't answer phone calls after 1500, Monday through Thursday. The thing is that those Friday "emergencies" are ALWAYS something someone has had sitting on their desk all week long and now they want to make it someone else's priority.
In my former life as a Field Service Engineer, the companies I worked for had an emergency on-call rotation. Unfortunately for me, because of my level of expertise TPTB felt they should be able to call me regardless of the schedule. Early on I screened all my calls with an answering machine and left my pager at home when not on my rotation. In later years with cell phones, my work phone was left at home and any calls to my personal cell were sent to voicemail Hell. This process even once earned me being "punished" for my lack of responsiveness. They tried to guilt me into responses because of my knowledge and position. I told them if that's what they want, they need to pay me 7/24/365 but should expect me to retire by age 50. They declined and management were told an appropriate four letter word response. Yes... I actually regularly cursed out my supervisor and his boss and got away with it.
yeah, had the same problem with my "co-workers" who had a habit of calling me when they had a problem. and I wasn't the chief tech either ! that fucker never picked up when anyone called his ass. as for pagers, I have turned down a couple of jobs because they wanted me to carry one of the damn things. weird part was that AFTER I quit, I still had a few people call me asking questions about shit ? and people wonder why now, no one has my phone number and I do not own a cell phone either ! dave in pa.
Don't get me wrong... during working hours I always helped out my coworkers with my technical expertise, sometimes actually going to site to meet them. After hours, when I saw it was a tech calling me I knew they needed help and would assist them remotely as long as it took. Management calling on the other hand, could just go screw.
I didn't mind helping others out, but what pissed me off to no end was the so called chief tech was a total kiss ass and use to turn off his phone and pager all the time (?) and he got paid big bucks for being "on call" too. if fact, the boss wanted me to get in touch with him(chief tech ) AFTER I helped someone out (?) he was kind of upset that I didn't do that too. doesn't matter anymore, place went tits up a year after I left. not because of anything I did, just the management sucked dave in pa.
My boss called me on my day off, it had snowed the night before and a coworker that only lived 6 blocks away couldn't drive in the snow. Was expecting the call, so as soon as I picked up, I said " I know, I'm on the way " . Drove 25 miles to the coworkers house, and blew the horn. When they came to the door, I said the boss sent me to pick them up. Drove them to work and stopped at the front door, aid I'll let you out her and go park my truck. Drove back home and parked in my driveway. They both got the message...
Just saw this. The only true time I have had off in 23 years is when I had a heart attack in Jan 2018. On call 24/7, even if I am on vacation or it's a holiday
