I only drove a semi delivering corn and soybeans to different elevators no more than twenty miles away and the number of numb nuts that did dumb ass driving tricks around and near the semi was astounding. When I retired from farming, selling the semi was a great relief knowing I wouldn't have to deal with the idiots our wandering around any longer. At least not in the semi.
Worked for a while at one IT shop that had a gal who never bothered looking while taking a merge lane onto the highway. Her reason - she drove a big pickup so everyone else would get out of her way. First thing I thought of was any big rigs on the road at that time. Dunno how many lucky breaks she had, but not a good idea.
Even though the pickup driver exercised poor judgement, the guy driving the motorhome showed a total lack of situational awareness. He should have seen the this outcome was inevitable and allowed the truck to merge by hitting his brakes.
The lane ahead of the pickup was blocked with a large flatbed (looks like it was off-loading construction equipment) and they had flashing lights and traffic cones set up to warn oncoming traffic. The pickup driver should have had plenty of notice and he had brakes and mirrors to use. The Semi driver was in his lane and doing the proper speed, the pickup cut in front of him with almost no warning and no place for him to go. Inertia isn't just a fact, it's Newton's First Law.
PU driver mostly at fault (95%?) but the semi driver could/should have been aware and initiated defensive braking earlier. I've had a CDL for 50 years and always try to anticipate which knucklehead is going to try and ruin my day.
People that learned to "drive" in a video game do this. Just because you made a pass on another vehicle going slower does not mean there is room to take their place. Ole Rammy lived up to it name . Hope stupid didnt get killed.
When I was working in SFL, Miami area, recall seeing the aftermath of a happy-go-faster who swerved into the breakdown to pass what he thought was slow traffic on I95 N IIRC just a mile or so north of the Golden Glades. Just so happened that a semi trailer had broken down and left the flatbed trailer in the breakdown lane, loaded with structural steel shapes at that location. Car hit trailer at somewhere around 90 mph. Cut the top off the car, cut driver and passenger in half. Messy. I'll bet the boys in blue used a barrel of Coke on the road that afternoon.....
