Dad was badly wounded in his right thigh by a sniper that popped up from a spider hole on 3/4/45 on Iwo Jima. He was island hopping with the Marines and for some reason he chose to be on point (bad decision) that day. His logic being, normally Japs would allow pointman to pass and then spring the ambush. He laid wounded in the open and try as they may his fellow Marines couldn’t get to him. A tank was called in and retrieved him and brought him to “safety”. An army medic wanted to amputate Dad’s leg whereas Dad challenged, “how in the hell am I going to feed my family?” At home, my Mother was tending to my two sisters and brother, all under the age of three. He was shortly transferred to a Navy hospital ship and his leg was saved. Dad was so greatful to the tank commander, he named me after him, Gale. (Yes, I fought my why through school. Always being reminded, I had a “girl’s name”. Think, Johnny Cash a “Boy Named Sue”.) Having a low draft number in 69’, I made the choice to become a Marine. Simply because of our motto,” Semper Fidelis”. I knew what the Marines had done for Dad and just in case I wanted that reinsurance. The buddies I grew up with that were drafted, either didn’t come home (lost two close friends) or they came home limping or not whole. Made my choice so easy and have never regretted it. I did meet, to say it politely, some “characters”. Semper Fi. Uuurr—-Rrraahh! I bellow. Sez 1st ANGLICO (Nam 7/71-12/71)
...and look at what has become of our beloved Navy. Rust buckets afloat because the deck gang strikers are too good to chip paint, drag queen shows on aircraft carriers and drag queens making recruiting videos. I puke every time I see this shit.
Back in April 2022 some “ Pacific Islanders” showed up at a local HS (they actually flew in) in Anchorage to settle a score (some facebook drama) and were packing a gun. The principal, a Marine, confronted them. As one brandished the weapon the Marine principal simply grabbed the gun from the hand of the person. Done, fini, situation solved simply. Marine’s do the unexpected when others would debate, negotiate and converse. (Google story if you believe not true) Semper Fi, Sez 1st ANGLICO
