I thought they had gone to an optical sensor that just determined the presence of something moving in a small area under the car. I mean, that's bad enough, but whatever system they use, it should be something that can be turned off.
I guess it comes down to who pays for this. Driver? Car wash company? Insurance?
At the entrance to every car wash I've ever used is a notice stating that the business is not responsible for any damage caused by using that facility. I've used both brushless, i.e. high pressure water and the kind pictured and both kinds have the notice. I think that's probably to scare off any incidental claims like scratched paint. This one is clearly to car owner's screw up with auto opening tailgate feature that should have been turned off. Sounds like a case for another .gov mandated safety feature requiring the external opening activation feature to be turned off when the engine is running or something.
